Capturing True Beauty in Weddings

by | Jun 7, 2013 | Perspective | 1 comment

Weddings are such a joyful time! As a photographer, I count it a privilege each time I’m asked to cover one. It is hard work and an opportunity not to take lightly, but it’s rewarding to be so closely involved in the happiness of a new couple’s happiest day, as well as fulfilling to take part in an occasion which appropriately honors and supports one of the most sacred institutions established by our Creator.

I feel that there is one thing, however, that tarnishes the true beauty that is intended in weddings these days. As a Christian photographer who seeks to please and honor the Lord with every single image I take, I find it very difficult to take pictures at weddings with immodest dress. Even for a cause as good as capturing the special moments of the wedding day, is it appropriate to take pictures of immodest apparel?

It is not in the place of any one photographer to set what standard is or is not considered to be modest for all other photographers, but it is important for each photographer to draw a line from Scripture for themselves between what pictures they will or will not take for the sake of promoting righteousness in their culture.

From what I understand to be the spirit of the Scriptures, modest apparel will bring attention to the countenance of the face. Revealing or tight-fitting clothing that conspicuously brings attention to the shape of the body spreads a net for the onlookers, attracting sensual thoughts, fleshly desires and mental adultery. Is this honoring to God? Is this what I want to promote in my photography? Genuine love—the essence of marriage (and what I strive to capture in wedding celebrations)—springs from the inward character of a person and is expressed in the countenance regardless of bodily appearance.

Therefore, it is not often that I am able to accept the opportunity to cover a wedding. In our culture of “evolving ethics”, immodesty is becoming more and more accepted. But when I can shoot a wedding, I am doubly joyous! For not only am I serving a couple who are choosing to honoring the Lord in every area of life, I’m actively living out Christ’s purpose for my existence: He gave Himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, living soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world (Titus 2:12-14).

Thank you, Matthew & Amanda, for your godly example of standing alone for purity in your single years and now carrying it through into your marriage. It was such an honor to shoot your wedding and I wish you all the best in your new life together!

I agree, and I am glad to hear that there still are photographers out there who have godly standards.
