A New Computer

After replacing the hard drive last year and the bezel last month, there was only one thing left that I felt needed replaced on my workhorse Dell Studio XPS before I could say it felt like new again. Overheating. Have you ever had this problem on your laptop? It was getting pretty bad on my machine after three years of use. Video conferencing was limited to about 1 hour before it would literally shut itself down because of overheating. The fan seemed to run in over-drive continuously. It got so bad that I started using a small, household oscillating fan in my office to blow on it during normal work hours.

Typical solution? Buy a new computer, right? Well, that’s what I was contemplating until I learned from my friend Jonathan in Quebec that the solution could be quite simple, and much less expensive. Does a fix of $0.00 sound better than $1,000.00? While I was scouting for the Quebec workshop, Jonathan generously offered his time to open up my computer and clean out the cooling fan. These are the pictures he took of before and after:

I pretty much feel like I have a new computer now! I have to admit it’s not perfectly new, and video conferencing is still taxing to a degree, but the overheating problem is certainly under control and I don’t have to rely on a household fan to keep business running. Especially helpful while traveling.
