The Difference the Sun Can Make

While I was in Vermont taking pictures for Garland Goat Soap (as I talked about in my last post), I continued to shoot in the area as I had opportunity. Most mornings, it was either cloudy or I was too tired from working late the night before to get out for a sunrise. But one morning, the conditions actually lined up well enough to get up and out the door before the sun came up.

I knew I wanted to get a good picture of a covered bridge somewhere before I left Vermont. What’s a trip to New England without capturing a covered bridge?! So I drove to one close by that I knew was somewhat in the open and would light up at first light.

When I arrived, I waited for the sun to rise. But when the minute of sunrise came . . . nothing happened. The mountains to the east kept the whole area in shadow for about 15 minutes after sunrise. Here’s a shot of what it looked like before the sun came over the mountains:

But what a difference the sun made when it did show up!

When I first arrived, the place looked so drab that I was tempted to go somewhere else for the sunrise. It didn’t even look a hint like autumn! But it’s amazing how the whole place was transformed under the warm light of the sun during the golden hour.

I think it’s neat how this ever-so-common phenomenon that happens every single day can be a simple reminder how the Son of God can transform the most drab of situations. I know from experience that brining God into the picture in any problem brings a noticeable change in attitude and perspective, opening the door for grace and creativity to permeate the situation.

And on a much larger scale, Zacharias said of Jesus well that, “Thou, child shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us to give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

It’s amazing the difference that the Son can make!

Here are a few more shots from my short stop at Cedar Swamp Covered Bridge, Vermont:
