Last week, I launched a survey showcasing 38 different photos, asking “Which of these photos would you describe as peaceful?”
And the results have been fascinating!
For some of the photos, 100% of the feedback was “Yes”, such-and-such photo could be described as peaceful.
And for other photos, the response was totally opposite, 100% of viewers answering “No”, such-and-such photo would not be described as peaceful.
With such stark contrasts, it reveals that photos naturally do communicate specific things to viewers!
Of course, not every photo had a 100% consensus. And some of the photos that I thought would be peaceful-feeling, other’s didn’t think were peaceful-feeling. And vise versa. That’s because every photo is different. There are a lot of different shades of emotions out there. Different things in different photos evoke different shades of meaning. And my life experiences are different than your life experiences.
But still, when looking at emotions in broader terms, it is just fascinating to me that so many people can look at the same picture, and come to the same conclusion without having been influenced by any of the other viewers.
And, of course, I’m extrapolating all this based on only 18 survey responses, including my own. So if you haven’t taken the survey yet, take it here! I’m really curious exactly how long the 5 remaining photos with a “100% peaceful-feeling consensus” will actually hold their 100% peaceful-feeling consensus!

Now I can say with more confidence than ever before that the above photo would probably make a great desktop background for introducing reminders of peace on a busy day. “And [Jesus] arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, ‘Peace, be still.’ And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” –Mark 4:39
