On Assignment: Studying the Word

Deadline’s coming up. Not finding time to photograph. Can’t find the right people to photograph. Find someone to photograph! It doesn’t work out to do the photoshoot. Deadline still looming! Ever felt this way before? I certainly have. Here’s what happened photographing this month’s new photo assignment, Studying the Word!

I would have photographed the entire family too, all dressed up and sitting on the living room couch doing devotions together, but guess what? Time constraints prohibited me from doing so once again.

But I got something! And that’s what mattered.

I don’t think I’ll submit this one, but I thought this shot was kinda funny. Smile

When the other James was ready, I tried a couple different variations from the one angle that I liked best. These were my favorite. Lots of different things you can have the subject do. Pointing to a scripture, flipping through pages, looking at the camera, looking at the notebook, looking at the concordance, writing while looking at pad, writing while looking at Bible, etc. etc.

I did try other angles too. I think these actually might be better for the website, with lots of space off to one side.

I photographed Nick a little bit as well. I liked the over-the-shoulder angle with books blurred out. Better for a website header too I think. He has an actual Greek Bible there I think too. Smile

Going Deeper

Most of the training we do here on Lenspiration has to do with cameras. And that’s because you can’t do photography without a camera. But you also really can’t do photography these days (at least, digital photography) without a computer. So that’s why this month’s Premium Training is all about finding the computer that best fits your needs. Now It’s Your Turn!

If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed thinking about trying to shoot this assignment yourself, the best thing you can do is go and read through the details of the Studying the Word assignment while asking yourself, “What one picture can I take?” There are several variations on a theme that the publisher has given us to shoot. Not everyone can shoot all of them. But go find the one that you can shoot, challenge yourself, and go have fun shooting it!

I noticed in the video you had the flash pointed straight up. Is that how you normal use it when you bounce it? Or did you just do that because it was a small space? I love it when people have white ceilings!

Me too 🙂 For bounce flash I usually point it straight up and then a little back. A little forward and shadows appear behind the subject usually, especially if the background is close. So, in the video straight up I intended to point back just a little.
