Include a subject. Anything interesting.
Personally, I look mainly a beautiful sunset/sunrise as an ingredient, not the menu. A sunrise/sunset is to a picture what butter is to a toast. It gives nuances of warm colors over the subject.
Did you took your picture at a wide angle? A wide angle may help giving an illusion of depth. That’s what I find hard with sunrises/sunsets. They may seem the most beautiful ever, but when taken in the camera, they look dull and flat. If it’s a landscape, there is a need for depth.
