I somewhat agree with @Jamesstaddon, while the edited version did reduce the highlights, it seems to be a little bit too heavy for the rest of the image. In my book, that photo would be a bit over-processed.
Here’s something you can try just for fun: Pop both the edited and un-edited photos into GIMP, and layer them with the edited photo on top. Then try changing the opacity of the top layer and see if you can get a good balance between edited and un-edited without the “over-processed” look.
