I don’t really know what categories of tips you’re looking for, but here are a few miscellaneous tips, in no particular order. 🙂
- Make sure you’ve got good audio. (From the limited research I did online, looks like the D5300 isn’t the greatest at recording. If you have access to a portable recorder, I would definitely recommend using it. If it turns out that the audio from the camera is good enough, then you’re fine! If not… then you have a backup. 🙂 )
- Use a telephoto or a fast prime lens for “interviews”, NOT a wide-angle lens. I just saw an amateur video that distorted people’s faces by using too wide of a lens.
- Use a very sturdy tripod, with a video head. I can’t speak highly enough for a video head, vs a regular tripod ball head! There is a world of difference if you want silky smooth panning, etc…
- Speaking of panning, cut your panning speed in 1/2. Always pan slower than you think you need to. I have been very disappointed with the motion blur that results from panning too fast. If you’re going to do a lot of panning, consider shooting 60p instead of 30p.
- Watch your focus. It might seem like one of those “duh” things, but I know what it feels like to get home with the footage, and find out that it wasn’t in focus. 🙁
- Set a custom WB before you start, that way it’s consistent throughout the video. If you need to adjust in post, you can.
- Definitely choose the highest quality settings that you have memory space for. Of course you’ll need to compress it for the final product, but you want to start out as high as possible.
I’ll probably think of more tips later, but that’s all I’ve got for now. 🙂
