What James and Lydia were referring to was the idea of visual balance. When people say something is crowding to one side, what they mean is that there is too much of one thing to that one side and not enough of it on the other to “balance everything out.” Thinking in terms of shapes and colors is a good way to help tune your eyes to looking for balance and imbalances. Disconnect from what the words say, zoom out to see the whole photo, and just look at how the shapes of the letters interact with the entire photo and where your eyes are drawn to.
