Were you trying out a specific technique such as panning, or simply experimenting? If you were trying panning you have to make sure that you move the camera at the same speed as the subject, otherwise you won’t get anything in ‘focus’.
Attached is a picture I took of a rally car. It must have been going at least 50 mph past me, so to get the car looking sharp, I had to pan the camera and follow it while releasing the shutter.
