Yes, the reason I was stopped down to f/8 was for sharpness’s sake, at that focal length the DOF was quite small. If you look carefully, you can see that the puppy’s nose isn’t really in focus.
But thanks for the advice, I hadn’t thought about the round bokeh as being related to how far you’re stopped down, but I guess it makes sense! I’ll have to remember that!
