Well, that is certainly a “story-telling” photo! I like it! It merely shows a “typical boy” but it does it in a way that makes you smile. One of the most important things in a picture is the way it affects the viewer. If the viewer doesn’t “feel” something, they’re not likely to remember the picture, or think of it as special.
I think James already covered the basics pretty well: exposing a little more, decreasing the DOF etc.
