If you want to keep a “hazy” feeling out of your backlit photos, you’re going to want to make sure the sun isn’t directly coming into your lens. If the end of the lens is shaded (either by a lens hood, by an actual shadow, or by an object blocking the sun), it’ll cut the haze. Conversely, if you want the sun flare (when done well, it’s not a bad effect), then allow the sun to come into the end of your lens.
