March in Indiana!
By Evelyn Sager
Green leaves are just starting to grow on the trees. The grass is changing from a dull bleak pale greenish-gray, to a bright sparkling green. Birds are chirping, and grasshoppers are hopping. The worms are poking their heads through the ground to be met with a sharp gust of chilly air. As the sun shines bright, Spring is almost here!
March in Indiana is a funny month, and the weather is widely varied for each year, but normally, March is a month full of windy, blustery days. Sometimes though, the weather goes crazy, and you might be out, just getting ready to plant a garden, and then all of a sudden you find it snowing outside.
Since Indiana is in the middle of lots of different weather, it is quite hard to predict what the weather will be like. It is just as likely to snow for the whole month as it is to be 80 – 90 degrees out. This March has wavered between upper 60 degrees outside, and below freezing. As you can see in the pictures, some are of grass with snow on it, and then just a nice brisk day of hiking at Turkey Run.

My family went to Turkey Run the other day, and I was able to get some pretty good photos there. (Turkey Run is a state park in Marshall Indiana.)
The big tree was growing on a steep incline, and I was fascinated by its huge gnarly roots. They stretched down behind it, and into a huge canyon. It had moss growing on it, as you can see, and was quite tall. The perspective was fun, because behind it, is a steep incline.
Out on the trail, my dad happened to turn over a rock that had pretty patterns on the back of it, and we were surprised to see a little salamander underneath. After seeing that first salamander, we spent some time looking, to see if we could find more salamanders. Sadly, we didn’t, but I am still happy that we were able to find this one. The beautiful yellows and little tints of dark green-ish grays are very eye-catching!
We hiked along a big river most of the time, and the sun was shining right on it, so I was able to get a picture that made the water look almost glassy. It was a shallow river, and so out in the middle of it there was a rock and you could see the water rippling over it, creating little ripple currents above water.
A little bit ago, we had a light snow covering, and I was able to get some nice pictures before it all melted. The grass was slightly icy, and the lighting was almost perfect.
I hope you have enjoyed March in Indiana!
(It was funny writing this because I knew that my pictures were so different in that some showed a snowy freezing morning, and the others just a nice day in March, although they were taken only days apart!)(This is not part of the essay!)
