That’s fun, David! And usually how it always is. I see something and I like it, so I capture it, even though I don’t know why. There are reasons why, and it often doesn’t matter if we know why, but it’s always fun to analyze to sorta find out why. 🙂
TheAuburn_IMG_6013.jpg – Perhaps there’s a sense of depth because of overlapping elements. There’s also the apparent intentional framing of the lady behind the car. There’s some visual mass there. I find it interesting that there are mostly horizontal and vertical lines in the photo, not many curved or diagonal, or even “leading lines” at that. There’s a sort of a synchronization of impressions. I think the one element that doesn’t fit is the man on the right. If it was the back of his head, or if he was looking into the photo, or if you could tell more what he was doing (conversing with someone), it would be better. Thankfully he’s in shadow, making that element contain less visual mass.
WhiteDuesy_IMG_5940.jpg – I am personally attracted to this one as well. It’s an abstract, but well composed. The eye is directed strongly to the right, but then it’s pulled back again by the circular element over there on the left. Circles are sometimes “eye traps”. But this one isn’t a complete circle, just the perfect amount visible to pull the eye over, but not too much. So there’s a visual tug of war going on, right then left then right again, but feasting on the textures and “sleekness” of the whole thing at the same time. I think the red color at the center of the wheel isn’t contributing well (too attractive?) so either crop it in half, or remove the red color so it’s just dark gray.
