Recently I’ve shot a couple of family get-togethers and on location shoots. One struggle I was having was with my white balance. There would be at least three different WBs on each location and sometimes more. (Outdoor, flash, incandescent etc.) I shot RAW so I can fix it in post, but I would like to get it... Read More »
Does using a shoot through umbrella with a flash cut the power of the flash? I have a flash with a guide number of 58. So if I use the formula of distance=guide#/f-stop; I can use my 5.6 lens with the flash at 10.36 ft. Does using an umbrella change that any? What about if I turn the umbrella around and have it... Hey, I’m really bad at lighting and I don’t use any lights, reflectors, or anything but my camera for lighting so I struggle. Does anyone happen to know of any lighting courses? Read More »
I’ve been doing “fall school portraits” with my siblings. (The assignment came at just the right time!) We’ve been doing one person an evening at golden hour. But I’ve been having a problem with getting a green color cast. I set the white balance using my white reflector, but that... Read More »
I have shot a few events with low light, but have managed to make them work. My brother is getting married soon, and I would like to invest in an off camera flash. I have a Nikon camera. One photographer I know advised me to get the SB 900 or SB 800. She does a lot of weddings. Yet, I had also heard that the SB 400... Read More »
While I’m embarking on my “Flood The Lenspiration Forum With Questions Campaign Extravaganza” I thought I might as well put up a photo for critique as well. 😀 So, at my last Family Portrait shoot, there was this lovely path back to the back pasture that lent itself very nicely for some photos. I... Read More »
Hi! I have another question! 🙂 So, with this maternity shoot I’m doing, I want it to be a golden hour shoot. (I just love that golden hour look! ) But, the problem I’ve come across in the past is that the golden hour only lasts for short amount of time, so if you start the shoot at golden hour you’ve almost ran out... We had a family photo shoot on Saturday, and I’ve been working on editing the photos today. I’m having some difficulty with the quality, and I don’t quite know what else to do to improve it. I had to pretty severely underexpose when I was shooting the photo to avoid blown-out highlights with patchy sunlight. I think... Read More »
A professional portrait photographer friend told me once that you always, always, always want light reflection spots on the eyes of anybody you ever take a picture of. I’ve always tried to do that ever since she told me. But I’ve noticed that when I take pictures of people with the sun behind them, I... Read More »
Hello! I’m taking our family photos in 2 weeks, and we’re planning to do it in the golden hour (of course 😀 ) I can’t honestly say that I’ve taken a ton of pictures in the golden hour. (I counted 24 😀 ) For family photos especially, I like the ‘flooded light’ effect in the golden... Read More »
When watching the replay of the most recent Photo Critique webinar, I noticed that you ( @jamesstaddon ) mentioned that you often position people so that they’re facing into the sun for portraits. From portrait videos that I’ve watched elsewhere some of them mentioned that backlighting is a great light to work with... Read More »
Indoor event photography is still something I’m working on. And having discovered the wonders of having a speed light, I’m eager to learn how to use it more effectively! (The speed light was a great help while running an informal photoshoot with extended family last month – but I just used it on... Read More »
Hi! I will be photographing some families in my area’s homeschool group and would like some advice on some flashes or anything else for lighting. (preferably under $100) All I have right now is the built in flash. Read More »
Good afternoon! Two questions for the webinar and anyone else who has some input!! 🙂 1) Indoor Lighting. One of my greatest challenges as a photographer is photographing indoor events. The lighting can be a challenge, particularly when the windows are behind the subjects I need to photograph! My current lens is a 28... Read More »
I am looking for Ideas on how to get sharp pictures over Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. There is usually so much activity going on that I don’t have time to change the settings and get the perfect picture without missing the moment. Just wondering if any one has any ideas on what setting I should set my... Read More »
