@JamesStaddon, I guess I could try getting low to use the picket fence as a silhouette foreground element when I shoot sunsets the next time. Is the Landscape Locations Map only for PRO members? Have you visited Australia before? Besides shooting beautiful sunsets, you can also take pictures of gorgeous tulips (in the springtime) and Australia’s amazing exotic wildlife. If you prefer shooting in the city, Sydney is a great place for you. In addition to being Australia’s largest city, it also has what some consider to be the most beautiful building in the world- the Sydney Opera House. Furthermore, the world’s largest free-standing rock, the Ayers Rock, in the Red Centre offers a great place for shooting during the golden hours. Due to the sun, the sky appears orange and deep red in the morning, while changing to violet and then blue. I understand that visiting Australia is no cheap holiday especially if you come from the other corner of the world. But, these are just some places to visit and subjects to shoot if you happen to come this way.

Have you had the opportunity to travel to some of those places you mentioned? I have a cousin who lives in Sydney, so when my Aunt and Uncle go to visit, they come back with lots of stories and pictures of their travels. Seems like a great place for landscape photography!
January 19, 2016 at 8:23 am #15217James StaddonKeymasterAnd oh, yes, the Landscape Locations Map is a PRO feature. It’s built by the PRO members too, set up to be crowd-sourced. There’s over 100 locations now, and I add to it all the time. You can view a sample map that gives the gist of the what information is provided with each location, at https://www.lenspiration.com/map/. Scroll down to the Sample Map, of California.
Now you’ll have an idea of what places to visit (and when to visit them) if you ever make a trip to the West Coast!

I came across this publicly available photo that appears to be taken from the same location as yours but illustrates several things that I mentioned earlier. Notice how the leading lines of the highway extend from the bottom of the frame instead of just coming in from the side. Also, less sky makes the city skyline more predominant, and thirdly, the nighttime exposure makes the scene much more dramatic.

January 22, 2016 at 7:52 am #15572Joshua OngParticipantUnfortunately, I have not been to the places I mentioned earlier. I’ve only been in Perth. Someday, I would love to visit those interesting places and do some landscape/urban photography there. It’s interesting to hear that you have a cousin living in Sydney. How long has (s)he been living there?
@dan-cope, now, I can see what you meant by the leading lines of the highway extending from the bottom of the frame. Your picture clearly demonstrates the two-third’s rule and was probably taken right after sunset. Looks like this Cityscape thread made it into James’s blog.February 18, 2016 at 5:58 pm #15947James StaddonKeymasterMy cousin and her husband have been living in Australia for quite awhile now. Probably 10 years or so? I’ve never had the opportunity to go visit, though I do intend to one of these days.
April 8, 2018 at 7:55 am #30318Joshua OngParticipantMore than two years ago, I posted a picture of Perth’s cityscape on this thread and was encouraged to take the photo during the golden hour. Here’s the same cityscape taken a few minutes before sunset. I was wondering if the picture would look better had the buildings reflected more sunlight (i.e., if I had arrived a little earlier when the sun was higher in the sky).
