ParticipantHere are my photos for this assignment. Me and my brothers went out early to birdwatch and I took the opportunity to take some pictures. It was an awesome morning with a beautiful sunrise and I really enjoyed the excuse to get out early and enjoy the morning and see what birds we could find. This was definitely a fun assignment to do!

ParticipantI went to photograph this assignment at a local park and really enjoyed the experience. However, my camera was not reading in the low light very well. (It was a very cloudy morning, with no great sunrise) Only a couple of photos turned out to actually be in focus. I tried adjusting my position and my camera settings, but the photos were still turning out blurry and pixelated. When I tried using an iphone the same thing happened.
Does anyone have some good tips for shooting in low light or early in the morning? (I didn’t have this issue last time I photographed sunrise, but that was on a clear morning.) Thanks for the help!We had a fun experience even though we didn’t get any good photos!:)

ParticipantWow, folks! Nice job on your photos! Here are the ones that I was able to take for the assignment. My twin and younger sister got up early to take our kayaks out to the lake and head up a large creek. The mist was so pretty! We saw a beaver swimming around in the lake, so we took pictures of him and hurried up the creek before the sun got too high. Once we got up the creek a ways, we climbed out at a place where there are a bunch of birds. It wasn’t hard to get photos of them birdwatching because they really were watching the birds.😄 It was a fun morning!

Participant@joannapotter Joanna, the only suggestions that I can think of are to use a tripod if possible to eliminate camera shake so you can use a slower shutter speed. Have your subject be a still as possible. Try using the lowest aperture on your lense down to 2.8. Bring your ISO up to no more than 1200 if it doesn’t look too grainy. (You can do some noise reduction in post processing.) As far as focusing in the dark, try using a flashlight on your subject to focus, and then put your lense into manual focus and don’t move the subject or camera. (If auto focus won’t work, try using manual focus.) In the long run, I would recommend getting a prime lense with a low aperture.(1.4, 1.8, 2.8) With a prime lense you have to zoom by walking closer, but they are a lot cheaper than buying a zoom lense with that aperture. I bought a 50mm, and that is what I shot this assignment with. I hope that this is a help for you! ~Rebekah

ParticipantHere’s my photos for this assignment! I had a lot of fun shooting! I have definitely not mastered low light shooting yet, and had a couple pictures that turned out really dark, but I still got a decent amount that I liked! These photos are from two times. The first time was very last minute; I went out with my sister to the edge of our property right after waking up and seeing the sunrise from my window–something I wouldn’t have been able to do without my own camera! Yay! I’m very glad I got that photo, it’s one of my favorites.
The second time, we tried a little more formal photoshoot and didn’t get much, but then my mom was able to take us out to a different spot just yesterday. I was blessed with being able to see and photograph swans there as well as the morning light!! I absolutely love birds.April 19, 2025 at 8:42 pm #95283David Parris
