ParticipantHi everyone,
We are currently at the beach and I would like to try long exposure photography of the waves. Does anyone have tips for long exposure photography? I don’t have much experience with it, so I’d appreciate any tips!
Also, does anyone have any other suggestions of shots to get at a beach? I want to take advantage of my time here!

ParticipantI’ve never been to the beach but I have photographed water before(rivers and creeks).
I would suggest using a tripod with a long exposure. Sunrise, or sunset would be pretty.
Here’s a lesson from the “capture course” on silky water effect.

ParticipantThank you @blessingscaptured for your suggestions! Thankfully I brought my tripod! 🙂

KeymasterWow, enjoy your time at the beach, @musicgal! There are a lot of interesting things to photograph at the beach, lots of textures, colors (at sunrise/sunset), and unique subjects for photos! Might this video be a helpful resource?
Also, regarding tripod + long exposure photography – just make sure that,
1. The tripod is stable (not gradually sinking into the sand) – you can put things under the feet to prevent that from happening
2. Be careful not to shake the camera yourself in pressing the shutter release. A remote shutter is helpful, but there are other ways to press the button gently without shaking the camera as well.Let me know if more elaboration on any of those points would be helpful. 🙂

Participant@lenspirationlydia I am so sorry!! I thought I had already replied to you!
Thank you so much for the link to the video and your points! They were indeed helpful.
Most of the days were cloudy, but I was able to get a couple shots that weren’t bad! Thanks for your help!

Participant@warrior-princess I haven’t gotten a chance to go through and edit any of the photos yet, but I’ll try to post some when I do!

ParticipantBeach is one of my favorites. Often there are bright colored umbrellas, children playing in the surf, sand creatures (like crabs, snails and – if you’re in the right spot at the right time, turtle hatchlings!), birds (lots of gulls – if there aren’t any, toss out a few pieces of bread, and you’ll have more than you want), rocks, grasses, flowers, water sports, boats, people (walking, running, sunning, sitting, talking, playing games, building sand castles), pets (mostly dogs of every size and shape), and – of course – the constantly changing waves (which you can smooth with long exposure or freeze as they’re breaking). Great opportunities for different elevation perspectives – from on-a-towel low to high above (like from a balcony on the 21st floor!)
Be careful of blowing sand (you don’t want to have your lens or filter glass sand-blasted).August 11, 2023 at 12:42 pm #80954Allison Estabrook
ParticipantWow, thank you @dotremain! I struggled with getting interesting shots of the waves, especially since there wasn’t much light (it was either very cloudy or very windy most of the time). I did see a few pelicans, but my shutter speed wasn’t fast enough, so they were a little blurry. I tried some long exposure shots of the waves from a balcony, but since I didn’t have a subject that wasn’t moving, it looked like my photo was blurry. I moved down to the beach where there was some tall grass for a subject, but by that time it was getting too dark for a good photo. It was a great learning experience for me!
Here are some of the photos @warrior-princess!

Participant@musicgal, those are lovely! I think the first and the third are my favorites.

KeymasterAllison!! Great photos! My favorites are the third one, with the sunbeams coming out of the clouds, and that last one because it’s such a creative angle and captures the patterns in the sand so nicely! Love them.
