The Old Schoolhouse Magazine is looking for photos to use on the front cover of their winter-issue magazines:
Assignment Details:
• Requester: The Old Schoolhouse Magazine (TOS) is a 300 page annual print magazine, also available quarterly in digital format. View the current issue at http://www.tosmagazine.com.
• Request: Beautiful, cover-quality photos of historic, one-room schoolhouses in winter surroundings. Leave plenty of space surrounding the subject to leave room for cover content. TOS is not picky, and would far prefer to use photos submitted by students than to buy photos from stock websites.
• Image Specs: Submissions must be at least 3300 pixels tall! Vertical orientation is best (though it is recommended that you shoot and submit both horizontal and vertical shots from each schoolhouse that you photograph to provide options and Photoshop leverage).
• Submission process: Submit DNG or full-size JPG files at THIS LINK, then 2) reply to this forum topic attaching low-resolution JPG files so I can know who submitted which images.
• Remuneration: PRO members will receive $50 per chosen submission; non-PRO photographers will receive $20 per chosen submission.
• Terms of use: Chosen submissions will be used under a Royalty Free license.
• Deadline: Midnight, Saturday, April 7, 2018.
• Questions? Ask by replying directly to this forum topic!Related Training:

December 18, 2017 at 1:20 pm #27934Ryan MadarisParticipantWell, hopefully we get snow this winter, because I live in Georgia. Can it be a church that had a school?
December 18, 2017 at 1:20 pm #27935James StaddonKeymasterHere’s a photo I took a few years ago. I don’t know if it will work because it was taken horizontally, but it’s the only shot I have of an old schoolhouse in winter at this point. I will keep my eye open for more schoolhouses as I travel for the Christmas holidays!

December 18, 2017 at 1:30 pm #27938James StaddonKeymasterYeah, that would be a challenge, @rmadaris! I guess what I would do would be to locate the old schoolhouses that are around you (using places like this http://oneroomschoolhousecenter.weebly.com/americas-one-rooms.html), go photograph them as you have time, and then you’ll know exactly what to do when it does snow. Even when it doesn’t snow, you’ll have some shots to submit for when this opportunity opens up for spring or summer pictures later on.
As for your other question, I would say as long as the building looks like an authentic old schoolhouse, then you’d have a chance at it being chosen by TOS.

February 5, 2018 at 11:09 am #28789Hannah MooreParticipantHere are some shots of a schoolhouse near me. The only reason I didn’t get the other side of it was because, being Saturday, the parking lot was full of cars. When I saw that it was full, I said to myself, “Well then, now I have to think like a photographer” and try to get special angles without getting any cars in the picture! I’m hoping there are enough possibilities for you to pick some good ones. It was rather cold, about 25 degees!
February 5, 2018 at 3:50 pm #28799Ezra MorleyModeratorWow, that’s a beautiful schoolhouse! Nice job with the composition too! The blue sky contrasts very nicely with the faded red paint. 🙂
If I could make one suggestion, I would try shooting with a little more room at the edges of the photo. They can always crop it a little if they want it tighter, but trust me, it’s pretty hard to “widen” a photo and still have it looking natural. 🙂
You might get some ideas for what they’re looking for by looking at past magazine covers here:

February 6, 2018 at 1:40 pm #28803Logan LamarParticipantI think the “head-on” one is the best, Hannah!
I’ve got an old schoolhouse near where I live… but it’s been unusually mild this winter. The low tonight is just 45˚F. Oh well?February 6, 2018 at 2:58 pm #28804James StaddonKeymasterI would try shooting with a little more room at the edges of the photo
Dito that.
@loganlamar, well, shoot it when the surroundings are picturesque, regardless of the time of year, and you can submit it as the TOS requests change from season to season.February 7, 2018 at 9:21 am #28823Hannah MooreParticipantI agree with you Ezra. Next time I will try to keep that in mind. I think at the time, I was just trying to keep the cars out of the picture, or any messy snow banks!! 🙂
Yes, @loganlamar the head-on one is also my favorite too!! Feel free to send some warm weather this way!! It’s been really cold this winter, I think the lowest here was -24 degrees!!
February 7, 2018 at 2:54 pm #28825Jinny SchoberParticipantGreat pics! I love the one of the schoolhouse between the fence posts! Maybe next time you could get the whole schoolhouse in between the posts (if that is possible! 🙂 ) That is cold! I live in Louisiana and the lowest its gotten this year is 12. And that is super cold here!

Taylor’s Bridge School in Townsend, DE built c. 1923/1924
By the way, +jamesstaddon, I’m pretty sure I helped fix the roof on that first picture – that’s the school house at the Northwoods, right?
