ModeratorWhew! Let’s hope it sticks for good this time. 🙂

ParticipantOh, bother. It didn’t stick. I had the same problem again. Running through the same corrective steps worked, but why did it happen again so soon?
Also, I downloaded my sister’s card (into a different catalogue) and had the same problem. With hers, the same corrective steps didn’t work. Any other suggestions?

ModeratorAre all these photos from the same camera, or is there more than one camera involved? Do you regularly format your SD cards in the camera instead of just “deleting” the photos from them?

No, the photos are not from the same camera. There are two cameras/memory cards doing this: mine and a younger sister’s. Mine was fixed through the same process as last time. I just realised, though, that I forgot one step when trying to correct my sister’s catalogue – I forgot to purge the Camera RAW cache file. I’ll run through the whole process again tomorrow and see if that fixes it.

I almost never delete directly in the camera. I was forced to do so just recently because we were on vacation and I ran out of space on the card. But I had just formatted it and done one photo session when the problem reoccurred.
I think my sister frequently deletes instead of formatting.
I’ll post again tomorrow after I retry fixing my sister’s catalogue.

ParticipantOK. I redid the process – doing all the steps this time. It seems to have worked. So I’m just left wondering if I’m going to have to do this every month or two… Why would the previews get corrupted so frequently? Is it possible the memory cards are getting to “used”? My sister’s card is quite old and mine has experienced a lot of wear, i.e. going in and out of card slots a lot. Is it possible the terminals are getting scratched and causing glitches on import?

The same thought had occurred to me. I suppose it’s possible, but it seems highly unlikely that 2 cards from 2 different cameras would exhibit the same behavior at the same time… Of course, given millions of years,
anythingis possible, but still… 🙂Ok, just to be sure, are we talking about 2 different catalogs on 2 computers, or 2 catalogs on one computer?
I think a HDD check would not be out of order, though it does seem strange that the only symptoms come through LR. If that comes through clean, I would consider a complete reset of LR to default settings. Make sure you have all your custom presets and stuff backed up though, just in case!
You can find out about a LR reset here: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3560748 (complete with an argument over the definition of “reset”) 🙂

They are 2 catalogues on one computer. I’ll ask Jonathan about a HDD check when he gets home. Thanks!

ParticipantCome to think of it, I wonder if it could be a problem with LR itself. There is one other thing that hasn’t worked in LR for quite a while now. (But it used to work.) Whenever I try to use the full screen mode, LR freezes there and I can’t get out of full screen. I end up having to shut down LR.
I’ll still try the HDD check first, though.

KeymasterThanks @buddingphotographer for your continued help in trying to figure out the solution to this problem. I don’t think I would have the patience to diagnose it long-distance. 🙂

ModeratorYou’re very welcome, this is the kind of challenge that I enjoy. 🙂 Any progress, @frazer-family?
September 27, 2017 at 8:12 am #25953Frazer Family
ParticipantUnfortunately there isn’t. 🙁 Actually, not quite no progress. My sister’s photos seem to be working OK for now (after running through the steps you gave above), but mine aren’t. At this point, every single photo I try to import ends up corrupted.
I asked Jonathan about a HDD check. He said it would be difficult. Something to do with how the computer is set up. It isn’t a true Mac; it’s a Hackintosh. I also asked about uninstalling and re-installing LR, but we don’t have a disk for that. Our original installation was a download from the internet, so we’d have to find the original files. My brothers have been really busy lately, so they haven’t had time to look into it. And I’m really hesitant to do anything major with the computer without them around. I’m hoping they’ll have some time soon, but in the mean time perhaps I’ll try creating a new catalogue and importing into there. I should do something about it soon as I’ll need to shoot some “product” photos (aka baby bunnies 🙂 ) in just a week or two!
Thank you so much for all your suggestions and help!

ModeratorYou should be able to download the LR installer for free as long as you own a license key. Try downloading it here: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/lightroom-downloads.html
