We were driving home from the library, when we saw some coloring in the sky that indicated quite a serious sunset. I knew there was a good outlook just a mile or two away, so I’m afraid I exceeded the speed limit a little to get there before it disappeared! Anyway, I managed to grab these shots before I had to leave.

Focal length: 24mmTo me, this picture really illustrates the superior dynamic range that the Pentax K-5 is capable of. According to snapsort.com, when comparing the K-5 to the Canon 5D MkII it is as follows:
Dynamic range — 14.1 EV vs 11.9 EV — 2.2 f-stops more dynamic range

Did you use a graduated filter in post? I think you could try bringing up the exposure on the lower portion of the images or vice versa. Very subtle change.
In the second image try standing on the other side of the road get down low and use the road as a leading line to the sky.

Here are two edits of the first photo with a filter and adding clarity and sharpening and a little vibrance with slightly different exposure changes.

Yes, I did use a (digital) graduated filter in Lightroom to lighten the ground up to approximately what I remember it’s looking like when I took the picture. I don’t own a physical graduated filter, wish I did!
Thank you for your suggestions! In this latest edit, I brightened the ground up by a 1/4 of a stop, and increased the feathering of the gradient a little so it’s not so stark. I also slightly darkened the sky and warmed it a little, I don’t think the clouds were that blue!

I agree. That’s a very nice shot, especially for being taken from the side of the road like that. It always surprises me what can be taken from the side of the road.
What I like best is what you said about “I knew there was a good outlook just a mile or two away…” When you get to know you’re area, you can really take advantage of the unique opportunities that only you see as a local! I’m sure dozens of professional photographers have driven down that road before, but never took the shot because it wasn’t on their chart as a “final destination”.
I would have zoomed in a bit probably, cropping off some more of the field on the right and the sky on top. It would have made the foreground flowers more blurred, but perhaps that would incorporate well into the shot… Just my initial thought.
Thanks for the suggestion on the crop! I think it does improve it!
As to the outlook, we live on a mountain, so I know that along that road there are several scenic spots. I wish I could have gone about 3 miles farther, where I’m almost sure there would have been a better view. I don’t think I have ever taken any pictures from the farther one, I need to plan a trip around the “golden hour” sometime!
