I took these yesterday and would like to know what you all think of them. I still have the block of wood so if you have any suggestions I can take them again.
I used the one camera flash for both pictures.
The settings where the same for both.

Simply put, I really like these. I like the first one (IMG_5884) for the reason that the shavings are more clear and appear more shapely. The one shaving on the right is so clear against the background. It’s your main subject. The others that peter out the closer they get to the left edge help fill in and put the main subject in place for telling the story of “wood shavings”.
The second one (IMG_5887) I like the aspect of the wood shavings being lighter than the background. They seem to stand out more. However, they seem more cluttered together, the “main subject” shaving is out of focus, and it’s not set apart from the others. I like the depth of field and blurry background through.
