With the specific moments of sunrise and sunset as our only hard deadlines\, and with capturing the vibrant landscapes of this area as our main objective\, we will let the particulars of each location and the elements of God’s hand in nature dictate our schedule. \nHere are some things we will likely be encountering: \n\nPhotographing both sunrise and sunset at breathtaking overlooks\nLong exposure photography\nReal-life location scouting\nMaximizing cloud types\, weather patterns\, and natural lighting situations\nTracking sun and moon positioning for intentional placement in photographs\nPrevisualizing scenes\nIn-the-field composition coaching\nNight sky and Milky Way photography\nExperimenting with James’ photography gear\nPick James’ brain on any photography topic\nFellowship with other Christian photographers in the beauty of God’s creation\n\nDetails\nWho should come: Anyone who has a camera and wants to take extraordinay photos in the great outdoors. Attendees under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an approved guardian (exceptions can be requested here). \nTuition: $199/photographer for the full day (sunrise and sunset)\, or $99/photographer for a half day (6 hours surrounding just sunrise or just sunset). Lenspiration members receive 50% off automatically at checkout. Tuition does not cover park fees. \nTransportation: Each attendee is responsible for their own transportation to and from the meetup location\, as well as getting around to the multiple shooting locations we’ll be visiting throughout the day (exceptions and carpooling options can be requested here). \nMeetup Location: The current plan is to meet at 5:30am on Wednesday morning\, May 6\, at Luftee Overlook on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina on Rt 441. This should allow enough time to set up and enjoy a stunning sunrise. Meetup location is subject to change\, but if you are registered\, James will reach out to you personally if anything changes. \nTentative Schedule: Meet before sunrise. Photograph blue hour and sunrise at Luftee Overlook. Drive seven miles over to Kuwohi Observation Deck\, the highest point in Tennessee for golden hour and devotions. We’ll then make our way down toward Bryson City\, stopping along the way at scenic locations as we run across them. During the mid-day hours we’ll explore waterfalls\, mountain streams\, and go tubing on Deep Creek if it’s warm enough and we want to make the time for it (there will likely not be enough tubes to go around so bring your own\, or renting options are available in town). After an early dinner\, we’ll plan to head up the Blue Ridge Parkway to photograph tunnels and overlooks through golden hour\, sunset\, and dusk. For those who can stay\, we may try photographing the night sky until around 10:00pm. \nMeals: You are responsible for bringing your own water\, breakfast\, lunch\, dinner\, and snacks in between. We’ll be eating picnic style in the outdoors for breakfast\, but we may be able to have lunch and dinner at an indoor location near Bryson City. \nLodging: Each attendee is responsible for their own lodging. \nWeather: Expect it to be cool in the morning\, warm in the afternoon\, low of 50F\, high of 75F. Bring extra layers\, a headlamp\, a rain jacket\, a hat\, water shoes\, hiking shoes\, and extra pairs of socks. We’ll be in the water\, I’m sure. DESCRIPTION:An educational workshop for those who love photography and the great outdoors!\nJoin a group of outdoor-loving\, learning-focused photographers for an ultimate photography experience\, observing and practicing more advanced topics in photography! CAPTURE is a two-day intensive\, practical and hands-on. It’s designed for photographers who love any genre but want to go beyond the basics in landscape\, outdoor\, wildlife and nature photography. Learning photography in the classroom of creation\, we’ll focus on building skills in these three essential areas: \n\nLearning how to effectively rely on your camera’s manual controls\nSetting up and following an efficient and organized post-processing workflow\nImproving composition by developing an eye for “seeing” and practicing specific composition tools\n\nIn addition to what is already planned\, be sure to bring your own list of questions and we’ll do our best to cover those as well! \nDetails\nWho should come: Anyone who has attended a Lenspiration Photography Field Day\, or who has been a Lenspiration Member for a while\, or anyone who considers themselves to be at a beyond beginner level with their camera. \nRequirements: \n\n15 years or older (contact James for exceptions). Adults are required to submit a Liability Release Form. Attendees under the age of 18 are required to submit a Minor Liability Release Form and are encouraged to come with a guardian. There is no fee for guardians.\nPhysical ability to be walking or hiking for several hours in a day.\nA DSLR or mirrorless camera\nTripod\nLaptop computer with image editing software installed\n\nTuition: $300/photographer\, or $150/photographer for Lenspiration members or friends of the Moore family! \nRegistration: If you do not purchase a ticket online\, contact me or the Moore family to let us know you are coming and you can pay with cash or check when you arrive. With the specific moment of sunset as our only hard deadline\, and with capturing the colorful\, spring beauty of scenic spots along the Susquehanna River as our main objective\, we will let the particulars of each location and the elements of nature dictate exactly what our schedule will be for the afternoon and evening we are together. \nHere are some things we will likely be learning: \n\nReal-life location scouting\nCapitalizing on the colorful flora of late spring\nHow to artistically photograph streams and waterfalls\nMaximizing cloud types\, weather patterns\, natural lighting situations\, etc.\nTracking sun or moon positioning for intentional placement in a photograph\nPrevisualizing scenes\nIn-the-field photography coaching\nGetting things right in-camera for HDR or panoramic composites\nWhat it’s like to do  professional landscape photography\nExperimenting with James’ photography gear\nPick James’ brain on any photography topic\nFellowship with Christian photographers in the beauty of God’s creation\n\nDetails\nWho should come: Anyone who has a camera and wants to take beautiful photos in the outdoors. Attendees under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an approved guardian (exceptions can be requested here). \nTuition: $99/photographer. Lenspiration members receive 50% off automatically at checkout. Tuition does not cover park entrance fees. \nTransportation: Each attendee is responsible for their own transportation to and from the meetup location\, as well as getting around to the multiple shooting locations throughout the day (exceptions can be requested here). \nMeetup Location: The current plan is to meet at 2pm on Tuesday\, June 3 at The Pinnacle Overlook Parking area near Holtwood\, PA. Meetup location is subject to change\, but if you are already registered\, James will reach out to you directly. \nSchedule: A typical Meetup starts in the mid-afternoon to allow us plenty of time to get to know each other\, do some exploring\, and finalize a good place for golden hour and sunset. After dinner\, we’ll photograph evening golden hour\, sunset\, and dusk until about 9:30pm\, about 1 hour after sunset. \nMeals: You are responsible for bringing your own water\, dinner\, and snacks in between. \nLodging: Each attendee is responsible for their own lodging. Ideally\, you will want to camp or stay someplace close to Holtwood\, PA\, so you do not have to drive far after sunset. \nWeather: Expect it to be pleasant temperatures\, but wet\, lows in the 50s\, highs in the 80s. Feel free to bring water shoes for wading. Check the weather beforehand in case it’s predicted to be rainy\, and plan accordingly. During the mid-day hours we’ll travel to Turkey Run State Park (possibly stopping in at Shades State Park)\, download photos to our computers (if we have time)\, eat lunch\, explore the trails\, and scout out where we’ll stake out for pictures at sunset. After dinner\, we’ll photograph evening golden hour\, sunset\, and dusk. SUMMARY:2024 Solar Eclipse Photography Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!\nJoin landscape photographer James Staddon on a photographic workshop that will help you prepare for and photograph the April 8\, 2024 total solar eclipse. With experience in photographing the 2017 total solar eclipse\, James will help give you an excellent chance of photographing the last total eclipse visible from the US until 2045. \nThe evening before\, we will begin with intense classroom training\, reviewing exactly what will happen the next day during the 6 preciously short\, photographic minutes of partiality and totality. Understand the camera settings necessary to photograph totality at it’s best\, the Diamond Ring\, the Ring of Fire\, Bailey’s Beads\, and the incredible solar prominences of hydrogen gas that are not visible to the naked eye.  In the morning\, we’ll scout locations for wide angle shots\, test our equipment\, and then practice\, practice\, practice for the moments of totality. When the show is over\, we will gather back together to learn various methods of merging and editing the photos we just took for the best presentation of our best shots! \nWhat’s Included\n\n\nSolar Eclipse viewing glasses \n\n\n\n\nHomemade solar filter for one lens \n\n\nTons of one-on-one instruction from James Staddon \n\n\nSchedule\n\n\nSunday\, 7:30-9:00pm – Eclipse photography training \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMonday\, 8:00-9:00am – Scouting\, testing\, and practice \n\n\n\n\nMonday\, 11:30am-12:15pm – Setup and practice \n\n\n\n\nMonday\, 12:15-2:00pm – Photographing eclipse \n\n\nMonday\, 2:00-3:30pm – Photo editing \n\n\nItems to Bring\n\n\nA sturdy tripod (An aluminum or carbon fiber professional tripod with a ball head is strongly recommended. Cheap\, plastic\, lightweight tripods with pan-and-tilt video heads are not recommended. Using your tripod should be second nature\, so learn how to use it and use it often beforehand.) \n\n\n\n\nA DSLR or mirrorless camera (A point & shoot\, bridge\, or mobile phone camera could work if it has full Manual settings. You can request to rent a DDSLR camera from Lenspiration here.) \n\n\n\n\nAt least 2 camera batteries (and a charger). \n\n\n\n\nA telephoto lens (A focal length of at least 200mm\, ideally 400mm\, is required if you want close-up shots of the eclipse. A telephoto lens is not required\, however. Landscape photos that incorporate foreground elements during the eclipse can be interesting.) \n\n\n\n\nRemote shutter release (Not required\, but strongly recommended.) \n\n\n\n\nIntervalometer (Not required.) \n\n\n\n\nMemory card \n\n\n\n\nCamera bag \n\n\n\n\nLaptop computer \n\n\n\n\nPre-installed photo editing software (A digital assent manager such as Adobe Lightroom\, and a raster graphics photo editor such as Adobe Photoshop are recommended. DESCRIPTION:An educational workshop for those who love photography and the great outdoors!\nJoin a small group of outdoor-loving\, learning-focused photographers for an ultimate photography experience\, observing and practicing the finer points of landscape photography! CAPTURE is a two-day intensive\, practical and hands-on. It’s designed for photographers who love any genre but want to go beyond the basics in landscape and nature photography. Learning photography in the classroom of creation\, we’ll focus on building skills in these three essential areas: \n\nEffectively relying on your camera’s manual controls\nSetting up and following an efficient and organized post-processing workflow\nImproving composition by developing an eye for “seeing” and practicing specific composition tools\n\nIn addition to these\, bring your own list of questions and we’ll do our best to cover those as well! \nDetails\nWho should come: Anyone who has attended a Lenspiration Photography Field Day\, or anyone who considers themselves to be at an intermediate or advanced level with their camera! \nRequirements: \n\n15 years or older. Adults are required to submit a Liability Release Form. Attendees under the age of 18 are required to submit a Minor Liability Release Form and are encouraged to come with a guardian. Hood. \n\n\n\n\nBridal Veil Falls – From a parking lot on the highway\, a winding footpath and bridges lead to a vantage point for this spectacular falls. The falls consists of two cascades in quick succession along angling rockfaces\, so when there is a good amount of water the falls looks very much like its namesake. This is one of many\, many scenic waterfalls in the area that are game for visiting.\n\n\n\nVista House at Crown Point – Millions of visitors driving from Portland through the Columbia River Gorge don’t realize the full impact of its beauty until they come around the bend near Corbett and see the famous building on the top of the cliff to the right\, 733 feet above the Columbia River. This is Crown Point and the building is the Vista House.\n\n\n\nMultnomah Falls – Multnomah Falls is the tallest waterfall in the state of Oregon. Visiting a 611-foot-tall roaring\, awe-inspiring cascade of icy water\, lets you experience the power and beauty of nature up close.\n\n\n\nTrillium Lake – Trillium Lake Campground is a beautiful and popular campground not far from the quaint town of Government Camp. It provides spectacular views of majestic Mt. Hood\, Oregon’s highest point.\n\n\n\nOneonta Gorge – This spot has been designated as a botanical area because of the unique aquatic and woodland plants that grow there\, a wide variety of ferns\, mosses\, hepatics and lichens of which many grow only in the Columbia River Gorge. There are four major waterfalls on the Oneonta Creek as it runs through the Gorge\, which has been described as “one of the true dramatic chasms in the state.”\n\n\n\nLost Lake – You can find the heart of Mount Hood’s beauty and wildlife at Lost Lake. Standing alone in the countryside\, the church is now a picturesque monument to the spiritual devotion of our forefathers.\n\n\n\nPillsbury Crossing – Pillsbury Crossing is a natural limestone slab that was used by pioneers to cross Deep Creek. The ledge terminates in a waterfall about 40 feet wide and with a drop of about 5 feet. For Kansas\, that’s pretty impressive!\n\n\n\nKansas State Capitol Building – With a dome taller than the United States Capitol\, an interior ornately fashioned over 37 years of construction\, and giant murals covering walls and ceilings\, this location poses both fascinating and challenging photographic opportunities unique to Kansas.\n\n\n\nNative Stone Scenic Byway – The winding byway\, which cuts through the rolling terrain of the eastern Flint Hills\, provides a chance to photograph the simple\, more subtle hues and nuances of the Kansas countryside.\n\n\n\nOld Architecture – There are several private\, abandoned architectural structures that special permission has been granted to photograph during the workshop. This provides special diversity impossible to capture outside of the workshop.\n\n\n\nLake Shawnee –  Though surrounded by city parks and a golf course\, this recreational hot-spot is a surprisingly good location for landscape and wildlife photography. The trick is going when no one else is around . . . in the quiet of the early morning.\n\n\n\nTed Ensley Gardens – Located on the west side of scenic Lake Shawnee\, this special park provides panoramic views of the lake and a beautiful setting to photograph a wealth of design ideas and spectacular plantings. The gardens span an area of nearly 20 acres.\n\n\n\nTransportation\n\nTransportation during the workshop is provided.\nTransportation to/from the workshop is not provided.\nAirport run to/from Kansas City International Airport available upon prearranged agreement.\nBe considerate of the dates and times your flights are scheduled to arrive and depart. We’ll explore the breath-taking vistas over the Canaan Valley\, the myriad waterfalls in Blackwater Falls State Park\, the historic countryside around Seneca Rocks\, and possibly even the vistas from Spruce Knob\, the highest point in West Virginia. While this wilderness is beautiful at any time of year\, there’s no doubt that the fall foliage at this elevation during the first weeks of October rival the color and splendor of New England. \nTransportation\nAttendees are responsible for their own transportation to and from the Luv Shack. The closest airport is Morgantown Municpal Airport (MGW) in Morgantown\, WV\, about a 2 hour drive from the workshop location. While no airport runs are provided\, you are free to work out travel plans with other attendees who may be flying in. Excellent shooting locations include Eklutna Lake\, Independence Gold Mine\, Archangel Valley\, Reflection Lake\, Matanuska Glacier\, overlooks along the Turn Again arm and Eagle River Falls. \n  \n\n\n\n\nArchangle Valley – There’s only so far you can go in a vehicle in Alaska. Most tourists stop at the scenic overlooks along paved highways. Others venture a little further till the dirt roads begin. Archangle Valley is where the dirt roads start to peter off. This incredibly scenic\, un-populated area gives photographers the chance to view the wonder of alpine terrain without having to hike for miles and miles into the back-country.\n\n\n\nTurnagain Arm – The Seward Highway passes right along this long passage of water from which walls of mountains rise on either side. Because the channel empties out toward the west\, it’s an excellent place to catch the sunset on the horizon while still being surrounded by mountains. The highway offers easily accessible spots to shoot the sunset\, as well as parks and trails which lead off the beaten path for more original vantage points.\n\n\n\nIndependence Mine – There are plenty of old buildings and historic artifacts to keep a photography lost in his work for hours. The old gold mine is surrounded by mountains on three sides. Because of the abundance of subjects and close proximity of the mountains\, this is a good place to shoot if the weather decides to cloudy up\, like it often does unpredictably.\n\n\n\nMatanuska River Valley – The mountains are especially interesting along the Glen Highway as it meanders through the Matanuska Valley on it’s way to the eastern border. A day spent driving and hiking in these parts can be very rewarding\, though again\, it all depends on the weather. From my experience\, the clouds can reduce the mountain landscape to what appears to be a hardwood plane without much warning. But that’s when you start praying for a break in the clouds on the horizon . . .\n\n\n\nParks Highway – As weather and time allows\, we will venture north on the Parks Highway for a possible overlook of Mt. McKinley.\n\n\n\n\nTransportation\nAttendees are responsible for their own transportation to and from the Workshop Location. However\, airport runs to and from Anchorage International Airport (ANC) before and after the workshop may be available upon prearranged agreement. Picturesque Abbott Lake sits peacefully in the valley between the three peaks\, making it an easily accessible location for unique early morning or late afternoon photo opportunities.\n\n\n\nOur Father’s Farm – Run by the hospitable Fuhrmann family\, Our Father’s Farm was the first location a CAPTURE Virginia was held. Regardless of the time of day\, there are always lots of subjects to shoot around here\, from hay bales and farm equipment to chickens and kittens. The property is also dotted with numerous relics from the past: abandoned\, perfectly antiquated tobacco barns.\n\n\n\nFallingwater Cascades – A quaint\, unimpressive-at-first-glance waterfall that tumbles over the rocks by an easy trail that meanders through typical Virginia woodland. But it’s the perfect spot for the creative artist who is patient enough to find and unlock the hidden gems that this gulch has to offer.\n\n\n\nGross’ Orchard – Famous for their fresh peaches\, apples and simple\, country friendliness\, Gross’ Orchard & Apple Valley Homeplace will be headquarters for the workshop. Whenever we aren’t in the classroom or out taking pictures somewhere else\, we’ll have the orchard and surrounding vistas all to ourselves for experimenting with our cameras or helping ourselves to whatever fruit happens to be in season.\n\n\n\nBlue Ridge Parkway – There are countless places to stop and things to take pictures of along the Blue Ridge Parkway on either side of Roanoke. Random places along the side of the road sometimes make the most interesting of pictures.\n\n\n\nApple Orchard Falls – A more majestic falls than Fallingwater Cascade\, Apple Orchard Falls is a great backup location if we’re looking for something more impressive to photograph. The higher elevation may also provide some variety in the color of the foliage.\n\n\n\nOther Locations – Whether iconic or not\, scenic things to photograph in this area are endless. Depending on what we feel like\, we can shoot the Roanoke skyline at sunset\, walk downtown historic Bedford\, hike up to the Peaks of Otter summit\, or venture out to iconic Natural Bridge.\n\n\n\nTransportation\n\nAll transportation during the workshop is provided.\nTransportation to/from the workshop is not provided.\nAirport runs to/from nearby airports (Lynchberg or Roanoke) are available upon prearranged agreement.\nBe considerate of the dates and times your flights are scheduled to arrive and depart. Wednesday and Sunday afternoons are the best times to schedule your flight. From rocky coasts to lofty redwood forests to lighthouse landscapes\, we’ll do our best to make the most of our three full days of exploration together as a team of photographers.  Below are only a few of the many potential shooting locations that I hope to visit. There’s no better place to be for sunset than the Pacific coast! \n\n\n\n\n Enderts Beach – What I like about Enderts Beach is it’s seclusion. Stretches of lonely\, rocky beaches are accessible by well kept trails just waiting to be explored. Situated just south of Crescent City\, Enderts Beach offers a panoramic view of the harbor and town\, perfect for taking pictures and spotting migrating whales. Locals know Enderts as one of the best places in the area for exploring tide pools too. Enderts Beach is a lovely\, quiet\, family-friendly destination that is well worth adding to a redwoods vacation itinerary.\n\n\n\nJedediah Smith Redwood State Park – Bright\, open\, and lush\, Jed Smith’s redwood groves are the most scenic in existence. There’s an unusual amount of variety in the color and texture of the trees\, in the size of the trees\, and even in the understory vegetation\, making the woods an interesting place to hike and photograph. The park also has some trees of truly stupendous size: perhaps not quite as tall as the redwoods to the south\, but bigger in diameter. With its huge swath of uninterrupted old growth\, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park is known for being the most “unspoiled” redwood park.\n\n\n\n Battery Point Lighthouse – Battery Point Light was one of the first lighthouses on the California coast. Rugged mountains and unbridged rivers meant coastal travel was essential for the economic survival of this region. Something quite unique to this lighthouse is that it is only accessible at low tides when the only landbridge is not covered the ocean.\n\n\n\n Six Rivers National Forest –  We’ll only be exploring a fraction of this one million acre park containing a variety of ecosystems and 137\,000 acres of old growth forest. Six Rivers is named after the six major rivers that pass near or through the forest where we’ll practice shooting flowing water and waterfalls.\n\n\n\n Trinidad State Beach – It’s a short hike through the woods\, across open bluffs\, and past seasonal wildflowers down to the beach. We’ll hope to be there at low tide\, the best time to visit. On the high bluffs above the beaches there are open meadows with scattered stands of alders. The park’s 159 acres spread over a marine terrace cloaked in beach pine and Sitka spruce. And consider the lilies of the field: the Columbia lily and endangered western lily grow atop the steep bluffs. This is one of my absolute favorite locations on the northern California coast!\n\n\n\nTransportation\nAttendees are responsible for their own transportation to and from Crescent City. If you are traveling by plane\, there are potential airport runs available to/from Crescent City (CEC)\, Arcata (ACV) and Sacramento (SMF) upon reservation. Please contact James at james@lenspiration.com or 203-721-0363. \nLodging\nFor lodging on Wednesday through Saturday nights\, there will be limited room available at the workshop location for between $35 and $55/night depending on the number of attendees. Sleeping arrangements for guys and girls will be separated. Average July temperatures in this part of California are High 65\, Low 50. We will be out before sunrise each morning which is the coldest part of the day\, and may feel cooler than you expect.
