Hi @ian! Just a couple quick thoughts I had…

– I appreciate the fact that you mentioned that you took the time to clear unwanted twigs and sticks. That is SO important! So often it’s the little time spent now that saves lots of time later.
– I think a little more vibrant color and contrast would be good in editing. Perhaps tweak the highlights,…Read more

Hi @ian!
I like the composition and the way you filled the frame with this shot! Great job on that.
I noticed that the crocus flowers in the foreground were just a little out of focus and also “overblown”. So I ran it through Lightroom and did some basic editing and fixed the highlights, and it looks better. What kind of camera were you using?

I feel like your photo is of something more than just an object. You’re speaking feelings of warmth and Indian summer. A little more space on the right, and bingo! It’s well edited.

Hi @ian, welcome to the forums! It was neat to see how you said this was one of your favorite pictures….one of my favorite pictures when I was first getting started was of a toad, the one I attached. It’s not nearly as sharp as yours! But I loved it so much I entered it at a local photography contest and it actually won a ribbon!

Hey, @ian this looks amazing! I would only have one critique, and this is for if you would really want to take your photo to the next level, I can’t tell if you did some contrast, it looks like a little, if you look at the stalks of the flower, they are completely blacked out, and it pulls attention away from the quality and genuineness of the…Read more

@ian Yes! I like that better. 😀 Did you already ‘reduce the noise’ on Photos? I do that to most of my photos. 😀 Then maybe you could ‘sharpen’ it and possibly add some ‘definition’? I can’t think of anything else. 😀

@ian I like that last photo! I would encourage you to keep the rule of thirds in mind. In this case, framing a little farther right would have removed some of the left edge clutter as well as giving room for the golden rod to “bend towards the center”. It tends to make a picture more life like because the subject has somewhere to go. Not sure if…Read more

@ian It looks good! 😀 Unless I’d seen the purple/blue spot before I probably wouldn’t have noticed it (and if I did, it wouldn’t bother me.) It may seem excessive, but do you think you could maybe add more light to the picture?? Oh, and what photo editor do you use so I can talk in familiar words? If you’re using Photos (previously iPhoto) I…Read more

@Ian I think lessening the vignette effect may be a good idea, since half of the frog’s head is dark and half of it is light. If the frog’s head was in the middle of the picture, a little vignette may add to the picture, but I think in this case it kind of takes away, because the vignette is creeping up into the frog’s head – I hope you get what I…Read more

Welcome to the forums, @ian!

Nice photo! I think the second shot is a lot better. Your subject has a clearer/sharper focus in this one as opposed to the first one. I love the warmth of the light in the second image, also. It looks so inviting!

For the next time, you could try to simplify your shot by not including as many things in your image…Read more

Of all the pictures you’ve showed me so far, @ian, I think I like this one the best because of the lighting and colors. And I think I like selective focus better.

Also, if you have the ‘retouch’ effect on your editor, I’d suggest taking out that light spot near the middle that’s blue and purple. It’s a little distracting. (If that’s possible -…Read more
