ParticipantOf all the pictures you’ve showed me so far, @ian, I think I like this one the best because of the lighting and colors. And I think I like selective focus better.
Also, if you have the ‘retouch’ effect on your editor, I’d suggest taking out that light spot near the middle that’s blue and purple. It’s a little distracting. (If that’s possible – I know it may be hard to take out. :D)

ParticipantWelcome to the forums, @ian!
Nice photo! I think the second shot is a lot better. Your subject has a clearer/sharper focus in this one as opposed to the first one. I love the warmth of the light in the second image, also. It looks so inviting!
For the next time, you could try to simplify your shot by not including as many things in your image and having a less cluttered background. Getting down lower so that the horizon isn’t in the middle of your frame and cutting the plant in half. You could try to frame it so the background is completely sky and the golden light is backlighting your whole subject.
Great job, though! I love golden light – it’s amazing! What an awesome Creator. 🙂

Participant@ian It looks good! 😀 Unless I’d seen the purple/blue spot before I probably wouldn’t have noticed it (and if I did, it wouldn’t bother me.) It may seem excessive, but do you think you could maybe add more light to the picture?? Oh, and what photo editor do you use so I can talk in familiar words? If you’re using Photos (previously iPhoto) I would suggest adding a bit more ‘brilliance,’ but not ‘exposure’… probably… I don’t know for sure. If you try it, please share it so I can see whether that was a good idea or not! 😀 I may also lessen the ‘black point’ perhaps. I’m not sure. But it’s your photo, so do what you like with it! And I like it the way it is too!

Participant@ian I like that last photo! I would encourage you to keep the rule of thirds in mind. In this case, framing a little farther right would have removed some of the left edge clutter as well as giving room for the golden rod to “bend towards the center”. It tends to make a picture more life like because the subject has somewhere to go. Not sure if that makes sense.
Also, things found along the third lines tend to have better visual appeal and tend to catch eye quicker than dead center things.

ParticipantHey, @ian this looks amazing! I would only have one critique, and this is for if you would really want to take your photo to the next level, I can’t tell if you did some contrast, it looks like a little, if you look at the stalks of the flower, they are completely blacked out, and it pulls attention away from the quality and genuineness of the photo, if you have editor pro and a way you could shade a little color back into the plants, it would make your photo absolutely one of a kind. Really well done. I am very impressed by looking at this.

KeymasterI think you’ve got something here, @ian. I feel like your photo is of something more than just an object. You’re speaking feelings of warmth and Indian summer. A little more space on the right, and bingo! It’s well edited.
