I wish I had gotten some more of this bug in focus. I don’t know if either of you have had the opportunity to work with a 1:1 true macro lens, but I can tell you that depth of field is usually REALLY thin.

thefarmhand, I actually shot this with my Sigma EX DG 105mm f/2.8 macro lens. With magnification being at approx.…Read more

Hi @Abbie!

Perhaps I’d move the grass clump a little to follow the rule of thirds (like toward bottom right corner), and get the camera down lower to shoot it more “straight on” as @Dan Cope said. 🙂 Maybe even get a little sky in it if possible… 😉

I agree with @Abbie Camuso, Having more beetle in focus would help a bit. Could you explain the thoughts behind the settings you chose, and the factors that called for them? The image does seem correctly exposed. I saw that you shot it @ f/14 and 1/50th sec. To preserve sharpness, I almost never go over f/11. f/8 would be much…Read more

@Abbie, here’s a topic I started that tells all the secrets about learning what camera was used, as well as all the exposure settings.

@thefarmhand, I just assumed you had used GIMP to edit that photo! 🙂 Lightroom definitely makes it easier to visualize the settings used. GIMP doesn’t really have any way to quickly show what edits were made.…Read more

Hey @Abbie! Lol, The way to find out what kind of camera you used was to check the image metadata.

As far as editing goes, I have attached the screen shots from Lightroom. You will find what I changed on the right hand side. Look @ the sliders to tell. I adjusted the exposure, contrast, detail, and a vignette.

I’d say that’s actually pretty good, considering that the camera used is a video camera, and not actually “made” for taking still pictures.
