@thefarmhand – No, I didn’t use the histogram info, I just used a filter on GIMP. 🙂 I really like how that shot came out! I’ll be on the look-out for more!! 😀

Thanks @Abbie! I like that one a little better than the first two I posted:) Do you have LR? Do you shoot in RAW? Were you the girl that was shooting with a video camera? If not, what camera do you have?

@thefarmhand Whoops!! Sorry, things seem to be getting scrambled up and posted where they are not intended to be 😡 oh, well that’s ok! 🙂 Yeah, I’m the gal that shoots with a video camera. 🙂 I use GIMP for all editing – do you use Light Room? 😕 Are you familiar with GIMP at all? 😐
@Abbie, Yes I use LR. I have GIMP, but I think it’s a lot harder to use. 🙂 I have Rawtherapee too, but I still just like LR.
@thefarmhand, I see. My brother teaches me how to use GIMP to edit photos, but I’m still a little “inexperienced” with it right now. 🙂
Hey @abbie, thanks for your response on what drew you to take the picture of the pond grasses.
I’m very encouraged to know you are experimenting and trying new and different things. And it’s neat, too, that you didn’t just settle for “the simple flower shot”. Like, I mean, you didn’t think a picture was awesome just because it happened to be of a colorful flower. Pictures of colorful flowers can be beautiful, but a beautiful flower and a beautiful picture are two completely different things. When a beautiful flower is captured beautifully, that’s what we as artists are looking for.
And because, for whatever reason you didn’t feel like you were capturing the flower beautifully, you moved on to something else . . . that’s a good thing. Beauty is a root motivation for taking pictures, and different people find beauty in different things.
As for the marsh grass, perhaps what you saw was the simplicity. Or perhaps the shape of the dark green against the light green. And that shape in relational balance with the sand underneath. It’s almost like a visual puzzle that you were working.
Whether this is true with you or not, to complete the puzzle, I think I would have made sure the top of the dark green grasses were not cropped off, positioned myself in a way that made the light green plants completely surround the dark green grass, and then tried to find an element in the water that would create a near-far relationship between the grass and the water.
I say all this without being there, but perhaps something I’ve said will strike a chord with you!
I’ve attached two pictures of some grass I took down at the pond at my place last winter. In one of them, I didn’t crop any of the grass. I think it’s more dynamic than the shot that I did crop the grass. Including the entirety of a subject can often help keep the eye within the frame for longer.

@JamesStaddon – I like those ideas!! Next time I’ll try to remember them. 🙂 The first one of your photos does seem more appealing since the tops aren’t cropped out. That’s how it should have been in my photo. Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions!!
@Abbie, I think that photo is pretty good, and I like the depth of field. Were you focusing on the flowers, or the morning glory leaves? If it was the leaves, you might be able to mess around with the rule of thirds and move your camera so they are in the bottom left “crosshairs”. Great spot to take a photo! I don’t have any streams or “waterfalls” where I live.
And @Abbie, about a earlier post you made, there’s no need to be sorry about pointing out my mistakes. I love critical review, that’s a lot of what makes all photographers better. I make plenty of them, and that’s partly why I’m on these forums. :D.
@thefarmhand – I think I was mainly focusing on the morning glory leaves. Where I live, we have a stream/brook but by now it’s all dried up. This pic was taken at a river nearby. Up here in NH we’ve got lot’s of water places near our house, which is a blessing!! Was that pond that you took in one of the pictures near your house? I enjoy rivers for photography, but I like ponds for swimming and that sorta stuff. 😉 I’m glad you have a positive outlook on critical remarks. 🙂 It’s so nice to have these forums!!! 😀
