Hi everyone! 🙂
I’m new to the forums and while I made an account on here a while ago, I haven’t used it much lol
Based on a lot of research and random quizzes and advice from other photographers, I think the camera I need is one from the Canon EOS R lineup. I am not for certain this is the one I need, and I need help deciding on which one to get or even if this is the right one?
I haven’t been able to go through the Lenspiration course yet and won’t be able to take it until the fall or possibly winter but would like to have a camera before then. I have no clue what I’m doing. I’ve always used my mom’s camera or a phone camera or a friend’s camera. Any advice you may have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
In Christ,

There are quite a few cameras in the R line by now. Based on what you said in the last paragraph, I would assume you’d probably looking for an entry-level camera?

After more research and going back through some messages I had from other photographers. I was pointed to three main cameras. The Canon EOS RP, R6 and R8. I’m not completely sold on the R8 though, quite yet.
I’m looking for something that isn’t to terribly bulky but will produce high quality photos. I do a lot of nature, landscaping, events, and portraits.

So that’s obviously the one I’d recommend the most, but personally, I’d take an R8 before an RP. You can decide for yourself what you want, but I’d say the R8 is the better of the two

I have one more question, where I’m going from DSLR to mirrorless will that hinder me?
June 26, 2024 at 10:42 am #87695Nate BergenParticipantI wouldn’t say so. I myself made the switch a little under a year ago and there are a few differences, but basically, there isn’t really any difference in how they operate. DSLRs have an optical viewfinder, whereas mirrorless have an electronic viewfinder, but I think that’s the main diff you’ll notice. Oh, come to think of it, the controls will also be a little different than what you’re used to, but that would also be the case if you’d get a pro series DSLR. But as to which setting(s) you’ll need to change to get a good pic, etc, that remains the same. It’ll take a little while (only a very little while) to figure out exactly how to operate it, but since you’re sticking with the same brand you started with, it’ll still be pretty simple. Of course, there’s always more to learn (I myself still have a lot to learn, too), but what I’m trying to say is that you’ll get the basics down pat in short order. The differences between the one you’ve used till now and the one you wanna get lie more in the fact that you’ll be jumping from an entry level camera to a pro series than that you’ll be switching to mirrorless, if you get what I mean.

July 19, 2024 at 4:28 pm #88112James StaddonKeymasterI am glad you were able to help, @nateb! Having very little experience with mirrorless cameras (let alone, the specific ones you were discussing), I think it was good you were able to help @cowgirlforchrist15 narrow things down.
@cowgirlforchrist15, the one thought I had about “moving from DSLR to mirrorless” is that lenses don’t automatically fit. So you’d have to get an adapter, and you’d have to research exactly what lens features would be lost when an adapter is used. -
