Another little clarification on the LR cons….
Cons: Fairly expensive monthly charge or a one-time payment with no updates;
Lightroom subscription DOES include all updates. I pay for the LR/PS bundle monthly, but I don’t have to pay anything more to stay up to date. And they’re always coming out with new detailed adjustment features.
April 5, 2018 at 6:00 pm #30287Benjamin HolmesModeratorYeah, some extra explanation probably would have helped a bit… I meant a monthly charge with updates or a one-time payment without updates and didn’t notice that could have been confusing. Thanks for clearing that up James!
April 5, 2018 at 6:56 pm #30291Lydia-BParticipant@dfrazer, I don’t think I have enough space on my computer to get ALL the programs. Thank you for taking the time to comment!
@jamesstaddon or @bensharpeningcharacter, so just to clarify, if I was to get the one-time LR deal there would be no updates, correct?April 5, 2018 at 7:05 pm #30292Benjamin HolmesModeratorCorrect.
One of the reasons I like Serif (Affinity) products is that you still get lifetime updates with a one-time purchase.
April 5, 2018 at 7:41 pm #30293Lydia-BParticipantOk thanks. So when you say “lifetime”, it’s LITERALLY lifetime, even if you get a new computer?
April 5, 2018 at 7:59 pm #30294Benjamin HolmesModeratorYes, provided that your new computer runs the same OS as your old one. (You purchase macOS and Windows licenses separately.) Additionally, with one license you can install the software on as many machines as you would like, as long as you are the only user using the software commercially, so there would be nothing stopping you from having Affinity Photo on both machines.
April 6, 2018 at 3:32 pm #30310Lydia-BParticipantHmmm ok.
If it’s not too much trouble, could someone explain more about RAWTherapee as well? (Including, is it used more just to edit RAW or can you edit jpeg on there as well?)
I’m just trying to make sure I know my options well before I make a decision. 🙂

You can certainly edit JPG files in RawTherapee! I made a tutorial for RawTherapee a while back which should give you a pretty good idea of how it works…
July 25, 2018 at 11:11 am #32333Ezra MorleyModeratorFor anyone on the fence about buying Affinity Photo (or Designer or Publisher) now is a good time to buy! They’re having a 30% off sale on all their products to celebrate the launch of Affinity Publisher for iPad! That means only $35 instead of the regular $50.
Unfortunately, as with most “design” companies, their sample illustrations are a little garish and sensual, so I won’t post a link to the sale page. You can go here to the store and just click on the one you want, the discount is automatically applied!
July 25, 2018 at 11:29 am #32337Lydia-BParticipant@buddingphotographer, do you know how long their sale is on for?
July 25, 2018 at 11:33 am #32339Ezra MorleyModeratorI believe it’s on till August 1st.
July 25, 2018 at 12:13 pm #32353Lydia-BParticipantOk thanks for the info!
January 20, 2021 at 12:26 pm #57618Ezra MorleyModeratorJust a bump for this thread in case someone is still considering Affinity Photo. They’re having a sale right now for 50% off all Affinity products, as well as a free 90 day trial!
