Hello! Our family is purchasing a new computer and we were wondering if anyone has some input from a photographer/videographer’s perspective on this computer. (See attachment)
Also, we are looking for photo editing program that doesn’t require a monthly/yearly subscription or internet to run it. We have Lightroom (2012) and Adobe Photoshop (2009 I think) but does anyone have a suggestion on updating/upgrading?

If your old LR still works, I’d keep using it. I haven’t found anything better than LR (mostly because I’m so happy with LR that I haven’t looked too hard. 🙂 ) RawTherapee is a free alternative with a learning curve if you’re interested. Affinity Photo is a one-time purchase, and it can do RAW editing, but it’s not really optimized for mass photo editing and sorting like LR is. AFF Photo is basically a direct Photoshop replacement (and a whole lot cheaper!) Highly recommended if you need an alternative to renting PS.

The reason I ask is when James was talking about “de-ghosting” and HDR merging in his blog the other week I looked for that feature in Lightroom, but couldn’t find it. I wasn’t sure if I looked in the right places or if it just wasn’t there. 😶

You’re welcome! Yeah, HDR and de-ghosting would both be newer features that didn’t exist in 2012. I also am lacking those features in my version of LR 5. 🙂

February 21, 2023 at 2:37 pm #75322James StaddonKeymasterHi @parrisfamily, for a one-time-payment LR alternative, you might want to look into Luminar or On1.
February 22, 2023 at 3:03 pm #75359David ParrisParticipantThank you jamesstaddon! Is there one of the two that you would tend towards (pros/cons)?
February 23, 2023 at 10:58 am #75390James StaddonKeymasterCan you access this article? https://www.lenspiration.com/video/editing-program/ That would explain the pros and cons. I think I would gravitate toward Luminar.
February 23, 2023 at 6:10 pm #75407David ParrisParticipant👍 I will take a look at it. 🙂
February 24, 2023 at 2:34 pm #75458David ParrisParticipantDoes it take internet to operate Luminar?
February 27, 2023 at 7:33 pm #75587James StaddonKeymasterThat’s a good question. It looks like they only have “Luminar Neo” which is a more advanced, AI-centered photo editing app that it was when I was researching the program before 2022. It’s more expensive now that I remember too. But it still is a better alternative than “renting” LR every month. From all my research just now, I couldn’t find anything that required internet to operate Luminar. I think you should be good. But do correct me if you find out otherwise.
February 27, 2023 at 10:05 pm #75589David ParrisParticipantThank you for the help James!! I appreciate you including the “wholesomeness rating” in your comparison list. That was our other main concern/question about a new editing program. Lightroom 5 did a really good job with it, hopefully Luminar will be the same.
