Good morning Lenspiration!
This week, we need photos that fit Luke 21:3-4:
“And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all: For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had.”
Your submitted photos will be used as a background to the verse as part of our VersePics Ministry, and when I meditated upon this verse, the images I thought of were honestly those of surrender, wealth, and poverty, so there’s some ideas for submissions! However, if you think you have a photo that would fit this verse better, FANTASTIC! I’m open to any ideas that you might have!
Instead of the usual twenty paragraphs or so of legalese, I wrote up some (very short) helpful stuff on submission rules and any other questions you might have here. I’d encourage PRO members who have participated in the VersePic Opportunities before the switch to free STS to go through the few paragraphs as well, as I’ve switched up some stuff to make life easier for all of us!

Sorry for the delay, but Lenspiration logged me out upon opening this page no matter how many times I tried for quite a while! Its working now, thank goodness!
I’ve received a few submissions through the DFR (Dropbox File Request) link, with Hailey Crowley submitting a very interesting photo with a fantastic look at coins, or the wealth, while still nailing poverty! I know I’m not going to be showing the photo on the forum just yet, but it does a really good job of focusing in on coins while still having lots of textural and photographic interest! You’ll see what I mean soon when I post the collage of submitted photos here later on. I also received three photos from Kimberly Snyder, who created some designs of coins to frame the Verse. Usually, I don’t use photographic frames, although when used occassionally, they can make a great overall design!
I’ll save my critique (it’s coming!) until the deadline ends, as work is piling up over here… Sorry about that!
One quick note, James would like those who submit via the DFR to please also post a JPEG file on the forum so people can see what is being submitted and comment! If we could do that from now on, that would be great!

Just wanted to post a quick update and thank our previous winner Abby Sherlock for submitting seven DNG files via the DFR! For some reason, Dropbox lets me preview RAW files and not DNG, so I’m not going to know what any of these look like until I put them in Lightroom and MaxCurve when the deadline ends here soon! Speaking of which, the deadline ends soon! Submissions will be closed at 12c tomorrow afternoon! This Opportunity will remain open, however, for continued updates on the VersePic.
I’ll post a photo that will give you a look at the submissions I’ve received as soon as the deadline ends.

Before we get into the winner, I just want to say there were a lot of good submissions, with each submitter taking a slightly different approach to the requested idea, which gave me a lot stuff to choose from, which in turn creates a better VersePic! Thank you all for submitting and participating!
And now, the winner! Abby Sherlock has stolen the prize this week, in part because of the quality of her work, but also because she took the initiative and gave me lots of variations (eight this time!) of the same subject!
Before I say anything else, I have to say that Designers and Clients love this, as then we are more likely to have a shot that works well for us or that can be made to work. Often, I have less than perfect results, not because the subject was bad, but because I needed a different angle or view of that subject. Think of this as clothing sizes: XL doesn’t work well for everybody, and XS won’t either. Being able to take my pick of different ranges, angles, lighting conditions, ect… allows me as the designer to be able to choose a photo based on my project rather than have to design a project around a photo.
With that out of the way, here’s Abby’s original submission in Lightroom Mobile.
She submitted everything as DNG files, so all of her editing was intact when I opened the file. … or rather would have been intact, if I had been able to open the file… Lightroom decided that it wouldn’t open anything other than JPG files, or it would have a fit and get into an infinite “loading” cycle. Not sure what the deal with that was, but luckily, I’m not just depending on Lightroom Mobile these days for RAW or DNG files. Or any lossless file format really… I didn’t do any editing in Lightroom, and I may talk about this a little later in greater depth, but all I’ll say is … WOW!!! 😉
The finished VersePic is below.
You’ll notice a lot of differences between the two photos, but what really stood out to me was the ability for the photo to almost seamlessly incorporate itself into the VersePic format. A non-distracting background, central subject below the text, and the subject of the hand with the coins off to the side all work really well together with the text to create interest, with a common theme of strong horizontal lines that I built upon with the text, custom decoration, and boxes beneath the text.
There are some difficulties and problems with the photo as well, such as the original photo being extremely underexposed. When I tried to raise the brightness, I encountered a TON of red, blue, and green noise throughout the darker pieces of the image, specifically the hand and the back of the bowl, which didn’t help much. Now, I countered that encounter with a few tricks of my own, allowing me to get a much brighter image than what it was originally without the effects of noise, but I still think it would have been nice to have a greater control of my subject’s exposure. Proffesional photographers shoot multiple exposures of the same scene, allowing them to properly expose and get the color of every piece of the shot, which translates into great color, contrast, and detail in every photo. Even if you don’t want to take multiple exposures, or don’t know how to do that, the idea that in most cases exposure is everything is absolutely correct. You can do a lot during processing, but you just can’t bring back information that isn’t there.
I’ll be taking care of things here behind the scenes still, so there may be a few update to come still.

You may have noticed some pretty interesting coins; my youngest brother Ben let me borrow his coin collection with coins from all around the world. There are some from France, Iceland, Norway, Caribbean, Canada, Barbados, and the United States. My other brother Tim volunteered to pose his hand for all the pictures.😄
