ParticipantI was using my solid state hard drive today when it accidentally disconnected. Now when I plug it into my computer it makes a beeping sound, my computer doesn’t recognize it in windows explorer and I can’t see what’s on it.
The only place that I can “see” it is the little hard drive icon at the bottom right corner of the screen. If I click on it takes me to the properties and says This device is working properly.
After “googling it”, I tried a different cord, then a different computer but to no avail. Is there anything else I can try?
The article said the next method to try is to recover the files using a data recovery tool. I just don’t know what program would be best to use.
Recuva has been mentioned on Lenspiration before for memory cards. Would it be good to use on a hard drive? The hard drive is a solid state Seagate drive, and I’m using a windows computer.
Thankfully most of my pictures are backed up, but I do have some important files on the drive that aren’t backed up.
Hopefully I explained everything clearly.(I don’t know that much about how computers work).
Thank you for any help!

ModeratorI don’t have time to give a full answer at the moment, but I will say this: keep it unplugged until you figure out what you’re going to do. Recuva is probably not what you need, but something a lot more powerful. Can you post a pic of the drive showing the name/model number?

ParticipantThank you @buddingphotographer! I’ll keep it unplugged!
Here’s a picture of the back of the drive.September 2, 2022 at 1:58 am #72142Charles Haley IV
ParticipantThat is a HDD, not an SSD. According to my research and knowledge of dealing with HDD, the beeping is usually a stuck head, which is a mechanical issue. This can happen if the drive is reading or writing when it loses power. This would take mechanical repair by someone who knows what they are doing with hard drives.

ModeratorYep, beeping is usually a pretty serious issue. 🙁
@blessingscaptured, how much are your files worth to you? I’ve heard good things about https://www.300dollardatarecovery.com/ but thankfully I’ve never had to use their services yet.
@charlesiv do you have any experience with drives like this? I was going to suggest booting a LiveCD with testdisk on it or something, to see if it would be able to mount a drive which Windows can’t and keep it on long enough to copy off the most important files. But if the beeping is due to mechanical failure, than that won’t help any, and could make it worse, (which is why I recommended keeping it unplugged until we get a better understanding of the problem).According to this article, a beeping noise is a common issue with these small Seagate drives that have been damaged somehow, and will likely need professional repair.

ParticipantThank you for your knowledge @charlesiv and @buddingphotographer.
I’ll definitely have to consider How much the files are worth. If its a mechanical failure, maybe I can find a computer store local that could fix it. Do you know if normally after such a fix if the drive would be completely useable again?September 2, 2022 at 10:49 am #72145Ezra Morley
ModeratorYou’re welcome! Sorry it’s such bad news though. 😐
I personally wouldn’t trust a drive that has failed for anything more than non-important duplicate backups. I definitely wouldn’t keep files on it that aren’t duplicated somewhere else.

Participant@buddingphotographer I also found it to be a common problem with the small Seagate drives. I don’t think any software will fix it, as it sounds like a hardware failure. https://www.300dollardatarecovery.com/ does appear to be good, but I don’t think it will work in this situation
@blessingscaptured, you may be able to find a local place that can do it, just make sure they are reputable.
As for using the drive afterwords, I wouldn’t trust it. I like @buddingphotographer said, you could use it for some non-important or secondary backups, or for transferring data from one computer to another.September 2, 2022 at 3:52 pm #72155Blessings Captured
ParticipantThank you @charlesiv and @buddingphotographer.
I’ll check into getting it repaired so I can hopefully recover the data.

KeymasterI’m so sorry @blessingscaptured! 😭 I’ve never had one fail by simply unplugging it during use. I’ve heard good things about http://www.300dollardatarecovery.com.

ParticipantThank you @Jamesstaddon. It’s good to know that 300DDR is trustworthy if I decide to go that way.
Even though it’s disappointing, I can see how God was merciful through it. All my pictures were backed up, and I had just backed up the two design projects I was working on.

KeymasterThat is good to hear, @blessingscaptured. Who knows how God might use that incident in your life to bring Him glory one of these days!
