This is a non-edited rough draft image.
But I would still like feedback.Settings:

The blown highlights on the berries are a bit distracting. I wonder if you could maybe diffuse the light somehow to cut the strong harsh lighting. I have often just stood/crouched in such a way that my shadow falls on the subject. You’ll need a higher ISO/lower aperture/shutter speed, but at least you won’t have “white spots”.
January 3, 2015 at 12:09 pm #9016JonahBParticipantThank you for the input. I will try editing in photoshop
January 3, 2015 at 12:09 pm #9017timtamParticipantI would try cropping out the twig in the bottom left portion of the frame and take another shot using a diffuser or at dusk. I think your DOF is good at f/8 however it looks slightly back focused making the berries a little soft.
January 3, 2015 at 5:11 pm #9018Rachel LParticipantThough the saturation of the red and green is beautiful, I feel the lighting/sun is too intense in this photo. Also, perhaps a lower aperture to provide more fuzz for the background and would eliminate the “bussiness” of the photo that @buddingphotographer mentioned! 🙂
January 3, 2015 at 6:01 pm #9019Ezra MorleyModerator@JonahB, do you have a RAW file for this shot? If so, it’s remotely possible that you could recover some of the blown highlights. If the exposure was too bright, they may be blown beyond recovery though. You’ll still have more options though, if you have the RAW file.
@Rachel L that’s a good idea! You’d just want to make sure that you have sufficient DOF to keep the whole subject in focus.
January 4, 2015 at 7:23 am #9020JonahBParticipantI don’t have a RAW file, because I don’t have large enough memory card.
January 5, 2015 at 6:23 pm #9027Ezra MorleyModeratorOk. That’s too bad! If you keep an eye on Amazon Daily Deals, they often have sales on SD cards. You can get good quality ones now for less than $1.00 per GB.
Disclaimer: Unfortunately, Amazon.com has some seriously unsuitable images right on their front page. It’s too bad that there’s not any other place to get the occasional good deal, but that’s the way it is. Although, come to think of it, Walmart isn’t any better… 🙁
January 5, 2015 at 6:31 pm #9029James StaddonKeymasterHey @JonahB, welcome to the Lenspiration Forums!
In the future, you should have the option to “Edit” your topic or reply to re-attaching a smaller sized picture. If you find that more convenient, feel free to do what works best for you.
I like the placement of the berries repeating patterns of the curly Qs.
I would like to see a shot with a more shallow depth of field, taking your aperture down to f/4 or so. Nice contrast between the berries and the dark black background. If you shoot in RAW, you may be able to recover some of the highlights in the berry highlights. It’s a very busy image; zoom in as far as you can and get as close as your minimum focus distance will allow.
Would you mind explaining a little more about why you don’t have a large enough memory card to shoot RAW?
January 5, 2015 at 6:54 pm #9033James StaddonKeymasterThanks for the heads up, @buddingphotographer. A trick I like to use (and is now possible with Amazon.com) is to search for the product at the same time I type in the URL.
For example, when I open my browser (it works in Chrome at least) I type “amazon.com” and then hit Tab; that provides the option to search Amazon.com without even having to go to the webiste. I then type in “carbon fiber tripod” or whatever, and it takes me to the list of products directly, bypassing the front page.
Hope that helps!
January 5, 2015 at 7:01 pm #9034Ezra MorleyModeratorYes, that’s a good option. However, to see the Gold Box Deals, you have to open the page, which sometimes has some extremely unsuitable imagery.
I wish that there was a browser plugin that would allow you to disable ALL images. I would want it to only load images that I specifically allow, maybe via a right-click “show image”. I’ve often thought how nice it would be to have an option like that. Only view images that you need to see, thereby blocking out all the unnecessary, obscene junk that websites throw in your eyes nowadays.
P.S. to @JonahB, There are several Transcend 64GB cards on sale right now if you’re interested.
