ParticipantI have a Nikon D5300 Camera a 105 to 18 lens a 60mm macro lens and a 70 to 300 zoom lens. I am currently using a camera bag with room for the camera and two smaller lenses, and I can just barely fit the zoom lens, but it takes a lot of readjusting, and all the gear has to be taken apart so it is hard to get it out to take photos quickly. I am looking for a better option for carrying them. Does anyone recommend camera backpacks? I have a lot of experience with carrying heavy loads because I hike a lot and I like the feel of a backpack better. I just don’t know durability wise, or room wise what I should get.

ParticipantAlso, I would like room for more lenses for if I expand. So probably room for 4 lenses and one camera.

James StaddonKeymasterHi @eagleeye, thank you for your patience! Sorry I didn’t respond sooner.
I’m not a techy guy who’s into all the latest and greatest new technology stuff. So I’m sure there are some great options out there that I don’t know about. And evidently there aren’t too many folks on this forum who have much to say about camera bags because there hasn’t been any replies. But I will share with you what I know from my own personal experience!
Like I said on the webinar, the Peak Design backpack is amazing. Maybe you could find older models for cheaper because they’re pretty expensive. But they last forever. I use mine for transporting my gear everywhere I go in a vehicle, and use it for events and weddings because it looks professional and not tacky looking when I’m wearing a suit and tie. The padding in them is thin-ish, but it’s dense and protective. I have the 30 liter which is sufficient for my needs. I had a friend who had the larger one, and it was just too big looking for me. In the 30 liter, there are three main compartments. I put my big zoom lens in the bottom, my wide-angle and prime lenses in the middle compartment, and my camera with a speedlite in the top compartment. There are side pockets for batteries/chargers/water bottle, and interior pockets for all the small things like batteries and SD cards and filters and everything. There’s even a pocket on the back you can slide a small laptop into. My slim 15in screen laptop barely fits if I push hard enough. If needed, I can make the bag fit my 2nd camera body as well.
I’ve also heard f-stop camera bags are really good for more outdoor stuff.
I think the best way to know what camera bag to get is to go to a store and try them out.
It has a lot to do with what you need the camera bag to do. Transport in the car to places? Overnight backpacking? Day hikes? Portrait sessions? Family outings?
I am going lighter and ligher these days, taking less with me. In fact, for day hikes, I like to simply clip my favorite camera and lens to my waist with the Peak Design clip and use my tripod as a hiking pole. 🙂
I have used a Kata bag DW495 and it’s really great. Problem is it doesn’t hold a telephoto so I don’t use it much. But I really like small bags that have a waist strap + a shoulder strap. That way I can swing it around to my front to access everything, but the shoulder strap makes it easy to carry. The problem with backpacks in the field is having to take them off and on all the time. Having said that, the newer backpacks usually have some method of swinging the backpack to your side or front with side pockets allowing you to access gear inside.
Those are my scrambled thoughts. 🙂

ParticipantThank you for your reply @jamesstaddon I have looked on eBay, and I saw some Peak Design backpacks for affordable prices. I do agree that the best way to find out what you like is to try it on. There is a camera store near me so I will see if they have them. I am looking more towards hiking or day packs. Thank you for your detailed advice, it is aways nice to hear from more experienced members of the community.

Lydia BennettKeymasterI got my Peak Design backpack off their marketplace page, where they list used items. I’m not sure how it price compares to ebay, but if you’re looking to go with Peak Design, that would be another place to look for discounts.

ParticipantDo you have any experience with the clik elite? I heard they were good quality when they were made. They have been out of business for a while so trying them on would be difficult. But all the reviews for when they were made were good so I think they would be a good option too. Let me know if you have any ideas or comments. Thank you!

ParticipantHi Sir! My twin and I bought these backpacks a year ago and have used them hiking mountains and gorges. They are very comfortable, hold what you need, and are very durable. I previously had a Vanguard backpack and was pleased, but this is a less expensive option, and works well.

ParticipantThe only two things I wish they had changed are…
1 I wish they had TWO side pockets with the tops elasticized
2 I wish all of the compartments were made out of the same material so that the little segments would connect to each other.
Right now, the way I have my backpack set up I pinned the small segments I need together. It works.July 9, 2026 at 6:24 pm #102021Samuel West
ParticipantThank you for your recommendation Parris family. My old bag recently wore a hole in it and so I needed to get a new one. I ended up getting a Padwa Lifestyle backpack and am very pleased with it so far.
For anyone else looking for good camera bag for a reasonable price, I would also recommend the Padwa Lifestyle camera bags. -
