I am looking into an upgrade from my Canon Rebel T1i.
Can someone give me a short summary on the comparisons between these 2 cameras (7D and 70D)?
The 7D is quite on sale right now.

Thank you!July 22, 2014 at 8:35 am #6805James StaddonKeymasterOne of the first places I go to when I’m comparing cameras (or lenses) is dpreview.com. Here’s a link to their comparison of the 70D and 7D: http://www.dpreview.com/products/compare/side-by-side?products=canon_eos70d&products=canon_eos7d
Another place I go for basic comparisons is Snapsort.com. Here’s their comparisons: http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-EOS-70D-vs-Canon_EOS_7D
Those two locations should give you summaries on the comparison. How much research have you done between the two cameras? Are you looking for personal opinions? That 7D is an incredible deal!
July 22, 2014 at 6:02 pm #6833JuliaParticipantI am somewhat more familiar with the 7D, but I noticed the higher megapixels and ISO on the 70D. I also gathered that the 70D is better for video (continuous automatic focusing).
But seeing as I’m not into videography, maybe the 7D is a better deal and all I need?
Thank you for the comparison sites – very helpful. I am interested in hearing personal opinions as well.July 23, 2014 at 8:22 am #6857James StaddonKeymasterIn my opinion, the 70D is a better camera. It is newer technology and has an edge on the 7D in many features. But, though I’ve never used either camera personally, it doesn’t appear that there’s much of a difference between the two when it comes down to the factors that I consider to be most important:
Sensor size and type: 70D larger, but not by much. Both very high quality.
ISO quality: 70D much better http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EOS-70D.aspx
Frames per second: 1fps fast on 7D, but both are very fast
Viewfinder resolution: 70D better all around, but not much difference here
Live-view: both yes, but 70D has touch screen
Build quality: 70D is better, but they are both built for durabilityWhat you have to do is determine the areas that are most important to you and then find out which camera best suits your needs. You’ve done this well with thinking through the fact that you are not going to be using it for video. If money is not an issue, I would go with the 70D, because it’s better all around and has some pretty cool features: touch screen, in-camera HDR, flip-out screen, video auto-focus, and wi-fi connectivity. Here’s a comprehensive list: http://www.examiner.com/article/canon-70d-vs-7d-which-to-buy
However, if the deal expires and you end up going with the 7D, you will not be disappointed. Any Canon with a “D” in it’s title is going to be a night and day difference from the T1i.
Would be very curious to hear the thoughts of others!
July 23, 2014 at 10:03 am #6862Sarah.BrownParticipantHey Julia!
I recently bought the 70D an would have to say that I am very impressed with it! The swivel screen is great not only for videos but also shooting for higher up or lower down images. I would encourage you to really think about what you really want the camera for be that video, or just pictures an then really look at which one would better suit your needs. Take time to study the cameras before you invest in either of them! I would also encourage you to pray about it! The Lord will give you a peace on which one to buy!
Here is a summary comparison of them both that I found but the ones James had listed are really great as well! http://thedigitalcamera.net/canon-eos-70d-vs-7d-whats-the-difference-between-them/
May The Lord bless you with finding a new camera and don’t forget to seek Him about it, He has even greater advise than anyone here could ever give you!
July 29, 2014 at 10:49 am #6984JuliaParticipantThank you for your feedback. I will continue to keep my eyes open for a good deal on the 70D, but at this point do not feel at peace about spending that amount of money on a camera. I appreciated the encouragement on seeking the Lord – I know that He is very capable of sendng the right camera my way in His timing.
August 15, 2014 at 6:25 pm #7099James StaddonKeymasterGood perspective, Julia! It’s always wise to wait for God’s timing on a decision, especially one that involves large investments.
A friend just told me today he was looking to sell his Canon T3i. Would you consider using that as an upgrade?
August 15, 2014 at 6:55 pm #7107Ezra MorleyModeratorIf you don’t mind buying used, craigslist.org is a place where every once in a while you can find a great deal! My brother just found a fabulous deal on a DSLR for me, and I’m really happy with it! It was a Pentax K-5 which used to be Pentax’s flagship till the K-3 came along. Anyway, it is weather-sealed and came with a weather-sealed 18-135mm lens along with a 100mm f4 macro lens, a 50mm f2 lens, and a 35-70 f2.8-3.5 lens. Also included was a Youngno external flash, a few wireless triggers, a cheap tripod, a camera bag, CPL and ND filters, and a Pelican hard shell case. All for just $580.00! As you can imagine, I was tickled pink!
So, don’t forget to check your local craigslist if you’re on the market for a “new” camera, you never know what might turn up!
September 4, 2014 at 2:01 pm #7381James StaddonKeymasterGood point, @buddingphotographer. I don’t generally like to buy equipment from sources I don’t know much about, especially used electronics, but it’s hit and miss. Craigslist is a good site to have your eye on.
