This is a great e-book by Lauren Hope called A Beginner’s Guide to Portrait Photography. She’s a Christian and was home-schooled. The book has very clean content which is hard to find in portraiture books! So I was so excited when I found it! 🙂
Another really good book for understanding the real basics of lighting is Light: Science and Magic: An Introduction to Photographic Lighting. You do have to watch out which version you get, as some version have some immodesty. The version I know is decent is the third edition (bright red), which I linked to on Amazon.com
Thanks for the recommendation, @dfrazer! Books that teach us about light these days are so amazingly “dark”, spiritually speaking. Do you have the book yourself?
I don’t own the book – it was leant to me by a local photographer friend. Do be careful which edition you choose though – the fourth edition does have some immodesty, and I suspect the later versions would too. I suspect the third edition was only “clean” by accident. 🙁
