(Psalms 101:3a)Unfortunately, that’s becoming rather problematic these days, when websites can push anything they want onto your screen. Most often, the lewd content is either in ads, or in side-bars of “recommended content”. Thankfully, there are solutions to greatly decrease the chances of seeing such content.
Install Adblock Plus! 🙂
The link above should automatically give you the correct download for your particular browser. If not, you can try downloading for: Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Opera, and Safari.
Installation should be fairly straightforward, in most cases it’s just a browser plugin to install. If you have any trouble with installation, just ask here, and I’ll try to help you out!
Once installed, it should automatically start blocking ads without any further actions on your part.
Now, that takes care of the ads, what about the “recommended content”? That’s a little bit harder to deal with, and it’s definitely not perfect… However, I think it’s very useful, at least for certain websites that have a lot of such side-bars, such as DPS (digitalphotographyschool. com).
You’ll need to get Adblock’s “Element Hiding Helper” from here:
I don’t know whether this add-on works with all the browsers or not, but I know for sure that it works with Mozilla Firefox.
Once you install it, you can use it to remove any element from a webpage that you want to. Let’s take DPS as an example. Here’s what it looks like before Adblock:
And here’s what it looks like after about 30 seconds of configuration with the “Element Hiding Helper”:
You can read about how to use the Element Hiding Helper here:
I’ll try to make up a tutorial in a little while, if anyone still has any trouble with getting it running. I’ll update this post with the tutorial once it’s completed.
EDIT: Here are a couple of video tutorials for specific browsers:

God Bless!

KeymasterThis is great! I use AdBlock Plus for all my Internet research. Do you know if it works on the new Microsoft Edge?

Unfortunately, it looks like the answer is “not yet” 🙁 That is, unless you’re a member of the Windows Insiders Program.
Adblock Plus is available for Windows Insiders on build 14342 or higher.
It’s in beta though, so I expect that it will be available eventually.
I just found out that you don’t even need the Element Hiding Helper add-on in Google Chrome, it comes built in to the AdBlock+ plugin! That’s very handy, as it’s that much less hassle to install!

ParticipantThanks for sharing this! I have been disgusted over and over again at what sites get by with without being tagged as having inappropriate content. I have installed the regular AdBlock version, but didn’t know I could get this and get rid of the rest of what I didn’t want to see. I’m excited to download this. Thanks again!!!!

Participant@buddingphotographer, since this conversation is 2 yrs old, I thought I’d see if Adblock Plus works for Microsoft Edge now, which is what I have as my browser. On the Adblock Plus website, they had this message:
Adblock Plus for Microsoft Edge is still in early development stages and has known issues and limitations. While ads will be blocked of course, it is possible to experience undesired side effects on some websites. Microsoft and Adblock Plus are continuing to make improvements which you’ll see through automatic updates.
Any ideas about what kind of “undesired side effects” they might be referring to?

I have no idea. I actually don’t use Adblock Plus any more, I switched to uBlock Origin, which does have a stable version for Edge here: https://www.microsoft.com/store/p/app/9nblggh444l4

Do you mind if I ask why? Or what some differences are between the two?
