I took this photo outside this January and I’ve been wanting to get it critiqued by someone other than my friends who complement everything. 🙂 We got more snow this year than I remember ever having, so I went outside to try for some good pictures. I walked around taking pictures until I decided I was too cold and went inside. I think this is the best of those pictures.
I took this with my iPod 5.August 12, 2016 at 8:14 pm #18654Mr. QuebecParticipantWelcome to the forums, @hannahpiccoloninja!
Great colors! It’s nice to see the buds peeking out of the ice. Sweet reminder of springtime!
I know this is hard to achieve with a camera that has a tiny sensor, but I would suggest to try to keep your background as plain as possible. Maybe you could try to photograph a close-up of a branch or a bud and oppose it to something plain, like the sky or the bark of a tree, for example.

* Try to choose one spot in the picture you want your viewers to see first.
* When you have determined your “subject”, that is usually what you focus on.
* This is awesome lighting. The eye is drawn usually to the lightest part of the image (right now, to the left blurry branch)
* Even if it’s only perceived by intuition, the horizon should always be level (unless intentionally made to be not level)
* Keep visual flow in mind: right now the eye travels down the main branch from the top and is led off the picture to the left (or to the right) without anything to stop it.I can notify you when the next photo critique webinar will be if you’d like more critique.
