I was taught that that 18mm wasn’t generally to be used when taking pictures of people, however, I recently found a situation in which 18mm on a “people shot” worked really well. What’s more, I was lying flat on the floor, which is another thing one doesn’t ordinarily do when shooting people! It always feels like I’ve taken a step forward when I go beyond “following the rules” to know how to “break the rules” correctly so as to come out with something nice!

Yeah, “rules” are really just tools to help us get started. Once you know the “why” behind the rules, then you can be as creative as you want and still get great shots even though you’re not necessarily using the rules. You’re just adjusting your tools. For instance, if you know that the “why” behind the “no 18mm on people rule” exists because it creates usually-unwanted distortion in the face, than there’s no problem with breaking that rule in a creative situation like this. In fact, it helps it to be an even better picture. A more creative picture.
You can see the distortion that would normally be on the person’s face showing up in the door frame. However, this should be easily taken care of in the Lens Correction Section of LRs Develop module.
Also, I may have also tried shooting this particular scene horizontal.
