It appears I’m fighting several issues at once – some I can identify, some not. The ones I can are: focus in front or behind intended point (typically with a busy background); Shutter speed too slow – below 1/60 or less than 1/focal length (300mm shooting at 1/240) – camera or subject movement. The ones that are really puzzling are those of still…[Read more]

Outdoor activities – two of a Frisbee course, dog walking, and jogging.

I am so frustrated! Several times this week I went out during golden hour and took photos – primarily for the assignment, but also just for. Today, I started going through them. NOT ONE was in tack sharp focus. NOT. EVEN. ONE. On some I could see what the camera focused on, but on many I could not. And that has been James’ comment on the other…[Read more]

I’m confused. There was a Mastering Composition Course that was part of the courses I completed in early August. 20 lessons. How do I know the difference between the old course and the new one? The cover photo and title in the e-mail looks the same as the course I completed.

Ah! One of my biggest struggles! And no, I haven’t found the answer yet!
If you zoom your picture to around 550%, and look at the center right cluster of insects, you will see they are not in tack-sharp focus. At that zoom factor there is a clump of flowers above and to the right of the insects that looks to be much more in focus, so I’m guessing…[Read more]

If you’ve never tried to take pictures of flags, and even worse, multiple flags, let me assure you – it isn’t as easy as it looks!
Four possibles from 3 different pictures. The flags. The iPhone with e-Sword software (trying to go a bit more modern and not quite as focused on the (deemed obsolete) past), and two shots with Cindy’s dad’s bible -…[Read more] -
David Tremain started the topic What Makes These Photos Attractive? in the forum Photography Q&A 2 months, 3 weeks ago
At the ACD weekend, I took 142 pictures. As I looked through the images, two stood out to me as exceptional – like significantly more attractive – than the others. The issue is, I don’t know why. Thoughts?

David Tremain replied to the topic Upcoming Event – NE Indiana Labor Day Weekend in the forum Photography Q&A 2 months, 3 weeks ago
Talk about a major disappointment! I came down with a 24-hour flu bug at 10 AM Friday, and slept most of the time. By the time I was functional on Saturday, I’d missed the major events. It was a question of whether to go at all. I did go, but got to Auburn about 3:30 PM – many of the cars had already left the courthouse square. I wandered about…[Read more]

Your comments during the evaluation session were helpful. I really think that one of the major issues I fight with is getting that tack-sharp focus. As I look at the picture, it seems like the in-focus area is very very small, and is along the edge of the blue balloon where it meets the yellow balloon behind it. I liked the split focus mechanism…[Read more]

I used a ring light to take this photo – which is the circular light reflected in the blue balloon. I bought it to use in taking videos of my mother-in-law, Eleanor Pelley, reading Bible Stories from the Arch Books Treasury: Vintage Collection, 1964-1965. She is 94. The purpose was to have video of her that my brother-in-law can watch after she’s…[Read more]

One of my favorite events is coming up this weekend – The Auburn ACD Festival. It is in Auburn, Indiana, which was the home to the Auburn – Cord – Duesenberg automobile company (ACD). ACD went out of business in 1937, but each year a festival is held in Auburn to celebrate their cars. ACD showroom is classic art deco style ($12.50 admission). My…[Read more]

At least in my experience, balloons turned out to be a more difficult than anticipated assignment. There are some great entries! I especially liked ones with something on the balloons – smiley face, paw prints, or even simple check marks. I especially like James’ shot with the dark background. I too overlooked the preference for vertical…[Read more]

It appears that .dng files do not permit setting of dpi, since they are the equivalent of a RAW file.
So, here are my shots for Balloons. Comments / critique welcome. I’m not happy with any of them, and am tempted to go buy some balloons and try again tomorrow… -

NEWBIE Question: How do you change the dpi in Lightroom Classic? All the DNGs I were able to export are at 96 dpi instead of 240 and I need the magic word (sequence) to make that happen.
Very unhappy with all my shots, but this is about learning, right?
It’d also be helpful if someone can direct me to the instructions on how to upload the DNGs…[Read more] - Load More
