Besides photography, I also love hiking, and I can often be found on a hiking trail trekking toward a waterfall or beautiful vista. Currently, my main camera setup is a Nikon D7000, a 50mm f/1.8, a 70-300mm, and a Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8.

I was hiking along the coast at Perdido Key State Park, when this Sanderling caught my eye. Darting back and forth avoiding the oncoming tide, he was quickly capturing tiny sand crabs and eating them as fast as he possibly could. I got my camera and 300mm lens out of my backpack, and sat down on the shore as the bird scuttled across the sand,…[Read more]

Ben, thanks! The main reason for the ‘brown-ness’ is that I took this photo back at the end of fall, so the colors were pretty much non-existent. I did edit it, although I could go back and edit it some more. Again, thanks for your insight!

Ryan Madaris replied to the topic Nikon D7000 vs Nikon D3500 in the forum Photography Q&A 2 years ago
Thanks everyone. I’ve decided that the D7000 will suit me just fine until I decide to upgrade to a more professional camera one day. The D3500 doesn’t have nearly enough benefits to warrant a switch.

I may have the opportunity to sell my current camera, a Nikon D7000, and get a Nikon D3500. Are the 8 extra megapixels and better high ISO performance worth switching? The D7000 only has 16 megapixels. Thanks!

@silas, thank you! The dust was from another vehicle, as you suspected. @bennett-family, thank you! Yes, it is another vehicle. Thanks for pointing it out.

This is a photo I took a few months ago at Cades Cove in the Great Smokey Mountains national park. Any thoughts?

Silas, great job! I would have used a quicker shutter speed, and a wider aperture, but other than that, awesome job!

@josiahw, it actually is edited slightly. I enhanced the contrast a bit and raised the clarity. I do see what you mean by the road being in the middle. I probably should have put the road to the right of the frame. Thanks for the insight!

Ryan Madaris replied to the topic Polarising Filters! in the forum Photography Q&A 2 years, 3 months ago
Hi Caitlin! Polarizing filters have several uses; they enhance color a bit, and they also can cut down on reflections. I usually use a polarizing filter when shooting waterfalls, or any other body of water that I don’t want reflection on. You can also use a polarizer when there is a blue sky with white clouds, as it will enhance the blue, and make…[Read more]

Ryan Madaris replied to the topic Purchasing lenses in the forum Photography Q&A 2 years, 3 months ago
@clarajohnson, I’ve used several different websites for photography gear. I usually buy used lenses, so I would suggest KEH or MBP. I’ve bought several excellent lenses from each website. You can also check Ebay, just make sure the lens is in great condition before you purchase or make a bid.

Wow! Quite nice! Originally, this photo was really just a snapshot, so I didn’t really put that much into it, but I love your edit! The lens flare is really nice, and the water looks much better as well.
