Yes, brightening the shadows did definitely improve the picture.
And yes, I’m afraid it is a little overdone. If you take a look at the upper right corner of the picture, you can see the “halo” effect caused by overprocessing. (See attached crop).
Try re-processing, and watch the areas where it tends to ‘halo’ to see if you can get it to look realistic without making it ‘halo’.
