These two picture i took on a vacation recently and i was wondering if they are to abstract or confusing the way they are edited? would you keep them edited like this or do you like the originals better? i edited these by decreasing the saturation on all the colors except yellow and orange. after i did this some areas on the picture were still colored so i used a gradient mask to decrease saturation in those specific areas.
I attached the originals so you can see the difference. On the picture with the creek i wasn’t very happy with the how it turned out, i thought the coloring looked odd; so that’s why i tried editing it differently.

It makes the golden leaves stand out from the background a lot, while reducing distractions in the background. It also helps to “capture the eye” and keep it looking at the main subject.

It totally depends on what you’re using the picture for. What is the story you want it to tell? It’s a great way of rescuing an otherwise rather bland picture, in my line of thinking. I’ve done it before too; see attached.
Since leaving only the subject fully saturated strongly draws attention to it as the focus of the picture, I rather like the feel of IMG_4088 better than IMG_3444.jpg. I like that the closeup shot allows me to look more closely at the (strongly emphasized) subject.
The photo still needs a bit of fine-tuning to perfect the effect (make the second branch completely desaturated), but still, you have a great photo in the works. Great job, @jenna.

Personally, I’m not as much a fan of the style, so I would probably either have tried to compose the photo in a way to bring attention to the subject through composition, or edited it something like what I’ve attached here to draw attention to the yellow leaves. This is a quick edit, so take it lightly, but it gives the general idea of what I thought when I saw your photo. 🙂
The main thing I’d do with your other photo is just crop out that little bit of sky in the upper right. It wants to grab my attention a little too much. 🙂
