ParticipantYay! I’m submitting a photo for critique! *throws confetti*
Here are some crocuses… at least I hope they’re here! 😀 I fear the size may be too big. We’ll see. 😀 What are your thoughts?
Here are mine:
Overall, I like this picture, but I think it may have been better if I had made the foremost crocus clearer. But I’m not much used to critiquing photos, so that’s why I’m posting it! I’d like to hear your expert thoughts. 😀
Also, what do you think of the watermark? @jamesstaddon just showed me how to do a watermark on TextEdits. 😀 I’ve never watermarked anything before so thoughts are veeerrrrrry much appreciated!!!
This photo was shot with a Canon EOS Rebel T6 with a 75-300 telephoto lens.
Aperture – f/5.6
ISO – 3200. YIKES!! I didn’t realize it was that high!!
Shutter Speed – 1/800
Focal Length – 300
RAW.Thank you in advance! 😀

ParticipantHey @kina, welcome to the critique forum!
Very lovely! I like the simplicity in the photo – how well the flowers stand out in contrast to the dirt around them. And it does look better with that light brown spot edited out. There is another light brown spot at the top of the photo above the leftmost flower in the back – if you really want to get picky you could probably edit that out as well!
Compositionally, I notice that the bottoms of the leaves are cut off in the photo. One thing that @jamesstaddon said which helped me in a similar situation is that everything has “feet”, and they should be included in the photo. When you take a full-length portrait, you should include the subject’s feet, not have it cut off at their ankles. Same thing with flowers – if you’re including the full flower with the stem, include the “feet” – the bottom of the stem; if you’re taking a picture of a tree, include the “feet” – the base of the tree, etc. I hope that makes sense!

Participant@bennett-family Thank you, Lydia! 😀 I hadn’t noticed that! (which is why I posted it!! :D) “Everything has feet” is a very helpful illustraion 😀 I’ll keep that in mind! Sometimes I don’t like to include the ‘feet’ in pictures because… I don’t know… I guess I just don’t like the effect! But in this case I think that adding the bottom of the stems is a very good idea.

Agreed. It very much depends on the scene and what you’re trying to capture and trying to accomplish!

KeymasterI am so sorry @kina, it has taken me so long to get to looking at your beautiful picture! I’m throwing confetti for ya though, and it’s been really neat to see some of your stuff dotting the Lenspiration landscape. If you’d like me to go into more detail about your photos, just ask on the webinar tomorrow (https://www.lenspiration.com/photo-critique-with-lenspiration-oct-9/), but for now, I think it’s just so awesome that you’ve already learned a lot about this picture. You didn’t know the ISO was so high….I bet you’ll be checking that next crocus season. 😉 The watermark is great, and here’s why….even after reading your request for comments on the watermark, I clicked to look at your picture and I didn’t even notice the watermark. And that’s how it should be! Watermarks should be complementary. They shouldn’t steal the show. So, having said that, my only comment on the watermark (now that I’ve gone back and looked at the picture a second time to see what the watermark looked like 🙂 ) is that perhaps it would look nice at like 70% opacity, and maybe with a little more space between it and the bottom and right edges of the picture. Keep up the good work, Kina!

Participant@jamesstaddon Thank you! Unfortunately I won’t be able to make it to the webinar tonight because of a couple conflicts, but thanks for offering! 😀 I’ve learned a lot about other things too – I shot our family photos the other day (family photography is my absolute favorite by far) and was able to change settings confidently (and instinctively!) 😀 I’ll see what I can do about the watermark – thanks for your opinion! I don’t think I have opacity settings on TextEdits, but maybe I can make it a color that’s not as stark. 😀
