Hi, my name is Joshua Ong and I was on the Photo Critique forum not too long ago. I’ve enclosed a picture of a Ferrari 599 GTO and I’m asking for any comments on this picture. I would like to know what is the best angle for taking a sports car and what the aperture value should be like for such a picture. Where should the focus be- at the front or on the vehicle as a whole? I know the right side of the car is underexposed. Below are the specifications of the picture:
Camera maker: Panasonic
Camera model: DMC-FZ30
F-stop no.: f/3.6
Exposure time: 1/50 sec.
ISO speed: ISO-80
Focal length: 7 mm
Resolution: 3264 x 2448 pixelsKind Regards,

My gut would be to get a little lower down so the car would block a bit more of the background.
I’m don’t know if you were able to go just anywhere around the car, but I might have tried from the other (driver side with this car, passenger side for all the North Americans on the forum) side of the car too. I like the offset angle you have there, and I would have liked to see what the background was like towards the right. Also, the shadow is on the driver One thing I’ve seen that can be cool is do combine some close ups of stuff like logos and other key elements of the car along with a nice full shot like you have here.October 2, 2015 at 8:48 am #13803Joshua OngParticipantHi @Nasa, thank you for the comments on the my picture. I did enclose another picture of the same car taken from a lower level. I think it does cover the background. I could have taken the picture from the driver’s side, but I would be blocking the sunlight from reaching the car and the picture would then be underexposed or have a shadow of the photographer. Looking back in hindsight, I should have also taken a picture of the car’s profile.

My preference would have been to step back and zoom in to make the whole thing more proportional.

At such a wide angle, aperture isn’t going to effect depth of field much.
If depth of field is an issue, then just make sure to focus on something of importance, like the emblem on the front, the headlight. Generally focusing closer is better than too far back.
You’ve inspired me to want to take pictures of the next ritzy car I come across!

Besides hiding most of the background, it probably shows the car closer to the tarmac and the reality of how low the car really is. The low-level angle could also display the aerodynamics or agility of such an amazing sports car.

There are many levels of critique. Just like reading the Bible. Every time you come back to look at a picture or a passage of Scripture, something new pops out at you!

@JoshuaOng Nice shot! I think it would really bring out the car more if you had the background blurred out a bit. It seems the background distracts and takes away from the attention of the car… 😕 🙂
November 21, 2015 at 8:11 am #14664Abbie CamusoParticipant@joshua_ong maybe something like this…
November 22, 2015 at 6:11 am #14666Joshua OngParticipantYes, there’s always something new to discover when reading the Bible or looking at a picture for the second time. Thanks for the suggestion, @AbbieCamuso. When taking the shot, I was actually unable to blur the background while maintaining a sharp focus on the car. I guess that would have been possible if I had gone up really close to the car. But then I would not have been able to capture the car in its entirety. With photo editing software, it’s possible to blur the background. What software did you use to bring out the car?
November 30, 2015 at 5:59 pm #14722Abbie CamusoParticipant@joshua_ong – Yes, there is! I used a editor called Aviary. 🙂 You can get it as a free app for Android or iOS.
