Warrior Princess
ParticipantHere are some photos of a precious litter of Blue Heeler pups I was commissioned to photograph! They are from the same breeders that my sister and I got our dogs from. Their names are Georgia, Audrey, Michelangelo, Koda, and Frida- 3 girls and 2 boys.
I shot studio-style indoors with a softbox, table, backdrop, and props. Some are with flash, some are not.
Most of them were shot with a shutter speed of 1/200
800 ISO
Aperture f/5.6I had a lovely time, and the lady I took the pictures for loved them- which is most important.
However, I would like to know what James and the community thinks of some of them, and which ones are your favorites!

ParticipantSorry for the quantity!
This post is for James, so he can pick which ones to critique tonight.
Tomorrow I will post a new topic, asking the community to help me pare 5 photos of one puppy down to the very best.
Thank you! May God bless you in your photography journeys.

ParticipantThank you!
Ahhh, what a cute pup! I do adore dogs so. I actually just had a party for my dog’s third birthday at a park, and he loved seeing his mommy dog.
What kind of dog is your brother’s? I see Chihuahua in it’s sweet little head. 🙂

ParticipantThe only problem I had with my photos in general was the flash glaring in some of them. How should I use a reflector to take care of that, and what color reflector should I use? Also, should I get an external flash in place of my camera flash to supplement the single softbox I have, or should I buy a second softbox? Does anyone have any advice?
Thank you in advance!

KeymasterWhat a great opportunity to learn and grow!

Yes, lighting is one of the main issues I was noticing in these photos. Direction of light and quality of light are both very important in these types of photos. If you notice, the lighting here is mostly front lighting and harsh (you can see how hard the edges of the shadows are).
The reason people use multiple softboxes in a lighting setup is both to control direction of light (i.e. set up on both sides of the subject), as well as the harshness, or quality, of the light.
The benefit of a speedlight rather than the built-in camera flash is that you can angle the light where you want it to be, and you can also diffuse it by bouncing it off something like a white ceiling.
Personally, I’d recommend learning a bit more about lighting before investing too much in it, so you know a bit more what would be good to invest in! You can use natural light for free by taking photos near a window or outside. 🙂 And that’s a good way to learn about lighting. Observe things like color casts, soft vs hard shadows, angle of light, color of light, etc.
Lighting is an area I’m definitely learning and growing in as well! 🙂
There are a few resources here on Lenspiration that might be helpful to you in studying this area: Lighting for Still Life Photography, How to Use Bounce Flash, and a post on 12 Tips for Puppy Photography.
Hope that helps!

KeymasterHi @warrior-princess, I have returned from my summer excursion and am catching up on the forums here! I can see now why it’s so hard to choose which photos to publish here on the forums! That was basically like 6 different photo shoots. They are all different from each other. I can see that Lydia replied to give some good ideas there. From my quick survey of the photos you submitted, Michelangelo-4.jpg is my favorite. Whatever you did for the lighting there, it looks amazing! I can tell you put a lot of work into these photos.

Participant@jamesstaddon Ah, yes! I did a lot of different props and poses (and puppies!) that day.
I like that one of Michelangelo, too! The lighting I used was one softbox. Also, there was quite a bit of natural light coming in from the house’s windows.
I think next time I should use a second softbox to balance out the shadows (as seen in some of the other photos.)
