What should I look for in a camera? I own a T3i right now, and I want to know of a good “Next Step Up,” camera.
April 27, 2015 at 7:43 pm #10720Ezra MorleyModeratorWow, that is quite a loaded question! Unfortunately, without a little more data it’s kinda hard to give any recommendations…
What do you use your current camera for? Do you mainly shoot landscapes, portraits, macro, sports, etc? What features does your current camera miss to make you think that you need to upgrade? If you have an idea of why you need to upgrade, that should help you to know what to upgrade to!
That said, I think the Canon EOS 70D could be a likely candidate…

Have you been able to think through some of the reasons why you’d like to upgrade, @BrodyEllis?
When looking for a new camera, you have to weigh in the all the main factors that cameras have to offer. Once you know what those factors are and how they will ultimately effect the overall outcome of your pictures, you can start to figure out which of those factors are important to you for your needs. Once you’ve determined which factors are important to you, then it’s just a matter of finding the right camera that has them. Unless you’re just buying a camera for fun, it’s worth putting a little extra effort into finding the camera that is best for you.
Learning the main factors that cameras have to offer is the place to start. In Section 1, Lesson 3 of the Foundations of Photography Course, I explain what I have found to be the most important factors to look for in a camera:
Camera Type
Brand Loyalty
Lens Compatibility
Camera Sensor (type, size, megapixels pixel size and sensor technology)
Ease of Use
ISO Range
File Formats
Focus Points
FPS
Durability
Screen Size and Resolution
PriceI cover all of these in the Foundations of Photography course, but feel free to take and run with this list on your own if you’d rather. They all effect the overall outcome of your pictures in one way or another, so all must be considered before you buy.
