Here are the settings I used for your file, @bennett-family. Note that these are a little drastic compared to my “normal” settings, because this photo needed some extra help.

Thanks for pointing me towards those links about sharpening, @buddingphotographer. I think when @jamesstaddon came out with that video I didn’t have LR (or was very new to it) and I never ended up watching it. Now I will!
So it actually looks like your edit is pretty similar to mine, except I didn’t do enough sharpening, and you did some more detailed work in Noise Reduction! I’ll be reviewing James’ video on Noise Reduction too while I’m at it. 🙂
This is why I advocate shooting RAW and enabling the histogram during image playback. If you keep an eye on your histogram, you can avoid extremes like this a little easier.
Well I have to confess, I have a general understanding of histograms but I don’t know a whole lot about them. 🙁 I think it’s about time I actually take the time to look into them and get a better understanding of them!
Wow, you’ve certainly given me some good tips and comments in this conversation to make practical steps in moving forward in photography! It’s been super helpful. 🙂

Sounds like a good idea! For what I’m talking about though, you don’t need to know much about histograms. All you need to know is that seeing everything piled into the left (or right) corner is a bad thing, and you want to keep it spread more towards the middle of the histogram.
Here’s some additional reading on histograms:
