I played around with cropping this photo, trying to figure out how to bring attention to the subject’s eyes.
Not sure if these have a feeling of wonder … or does she look more curious or sleepy? 😉
In the photos in my comment above, she is reaching up to catch bubbles. Is it too smiley vs. a look of wonder?
Since I did not shoot these photos specifically for this assignment, they do not have the dark background noted in the initial request.

I failed to read the instructions thoroughly earlier and missed that the orientation must be horizontal 😉 I recropped the photo in two different ways, both horizontal now 🙂

Thank you James for the info on the photo details! I love that this assignment gives opportunity to uphold the sanctity of life. I ended up not being able to fit in a new photoshoot specifically for this assignment, but I pulled out this photo that I took in October. Not sure if it fits the request, but it’s worth a try 🙂 Also, I wasn’t sure if I should crop it? (not sure what would be most useful for where it needs to be used)

Would it be bad if the photo had a Christmas feel, such as Christmas lights in the background (bokeh)? Should the photos be neutral of any specific season or holiday? 🙂
I don’t know if I’ll have time to shoot this assignment, but it sure would be a fun one to try!Here are some photos of “harvest” that I shot this spring and summer in our yard. Not sure if they are exactly calendar worthy or illustrate the concept of Hebrews 11:3? but I am looking forward to learning from this project! All critique and tips for improvement are welcome 🙂
Camera used for all my photos: Nikon D750. Lens: 50mm 1.8. I think I used the 70-200 2.8 for the tangerine photo.

Hi! Any requirements for the background? Does it have to be nature/landscape scenery or can it be a cityscape, or nature and some buildings? 🙂
This is a unique assignment! I’m not sure if I’ll have time to shoot it (tis the season for finals) but definitely will if the opportunity arises!

(The WD was $10 more.) I had Adorama reward points that had to be used before they expired, so my total price was less than $30 ☺ We’ll see how it works! And I guess I should be on the look out for a second as backup 😀James, how’s the bokeh on your 24-105, especially at the wider end of the zoom?
I’ve experienced the same problem with the 50mm! I recently took Christmas photos of a toddler using the 50mm. I don’t know how many times I bumped into the mom and other kids while using my feet as zoom. I like how much of a blurred background I get, but it’s been hard to be sure I get the right amount of focus (like the person’s whole face, not just their eyeball 😉 )
Any tips on how to be more successful with primes? 🙂
Ezra, those are some adorable puppy pics on your family’s website 🙂 I’ve taken alot of kitten photos this year. We foster and help adopt out kittens from our local animal shelter. I take photos for advertising them, and when someone adopts, they get a special collection of photos of their kitten. It’s always fun to see other people’s animal photo ideas 🙂

I have the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 DI VC and enjoy it very much! When comparing it to the Nikon version before purchase, the differences were not enough for me to pay the extra $$. In fact, a rep at our local camera store said she preferred the Tamron version over the Nikon because she felt it had better image stabalization. I’ve used it to take head shots of kittens with nice results. I’m assuming it should do just as good for humans 🙂 The only downside I’ve run into is when I’m indoors and subjects are close to me.I’m borrowing a friend’s Nikon 50mm f/1.8. Sometimes it seems that the 70-200 focuses faster and sharper than the 50mm. Not sure why…

I was excited for a wide range zoom lens when Tamron came out with the 18-400 this year. But disappointment came when I realized it was a crop sensor lens 🙁 Oh well, maybe someone will find a way to make an 18-400 with 2.8 aperture AND in a practical size for full frame!! 😀 And then “I couldn’t capture the moment because I had the wrong lens” will be a thing of the past haha!

The discussion here has helped me narrow down what I need in a camera. Least amount of noise at high ISOs and clarity in low light situations (and all the time!) are my top priorities. The D750 may just be the best option within budget. From your experiences here, it sounds like it has plenty of ability for action. I will prayerfully finalize my decision as I choose a camera that will serve the Lord most effectively 🙂

I see @mrstevens has experience with the Nikon D750, which is a body I’ve been considering. Can I ask why you chose the full frame D750, rather than a higher end DX crop sensor body, like the D500? I was chatting with an Adorama rep who stated that he chose the D7200 and D500 (both DX) over the D750! He had outdoor football game photos at night to prove what his D7200 could do at 6400 ISO with his 70-200 2.8 lens. They were crisp clear!
Have you done any action shots with your D750? How does it perform for action in low light or indoors? I need a camera that will do good for action (evening youth activities outdoors, fast moving children and animals, karate indoors, etc.) and also work great for portraits. My lens is the Tamron 70-200 2.8.The D750’s ISO goes to 12,800. The D7200 goes to 25,600. Both do about 6 fps, while the D500 does 10 fps.

Thank you for the insights here! Yes, I realize the jump to FX might sound ridiculous. But I figured, hey, if I’m going to upgrade, why not go for the highest quality possible? If I’m going to shoot, then I’m going to do my best, not produce <100% results 🙂 Eventually I would like to be shooting full frame, and the results I’m getting with my T3 make me skeptical to try anything else crop sensor lol. However, I do want to make a wise investment and not spend more than necessary.
I find myself shooting alot of moving subjects, so I want a camera/lens that will perform well in those situations.
More bokeh/blurred background is high on the priority list for me!
The switch to Nikon is because a friend shoots a Nikon and is willing to share lenses with me. I’ve been playing around with her D80 and 50mm 1.8f. LOVE the outdoor results for portraits, but anything moving fast (like outdoor youth games) or anything moving at all indoors (like walking toddler) has been close to impossible to get stark clear.
A speed light is an interesting idea. I haven’t experienced with one of those. It would be a nice idea as long as it doesn’t white out the subject (the way a flash does).
I actually did consider the Canon 80D, before I thought about switching to full frame 🙂
You mentioned the Nikon D7200. Have you personally used that camera? How would you compare the quality and clarity of photos to the T3?
